Penn State Great Valley: School of Graduate Professional Studies

Spring 2024

In spring 2024, our campus hosted several community events including two film screenings, a panel discussion, two interactive community art events, and two lectures. Special guests included Doug Tallamy, Mark Segal, Rolland Ballester, and Lori Hepner.

Arguably the first American celebrity fashion designer, Roy Halston Frowick, known by the single moniker Halston, came from a childhood in Iowa to create the sexy-flowing look that defined the 1970’s. Directed by Frédéric Tcheng (Dior and I; Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel) and produced by Roland Ballester (MerPeople), Halston weaves a partially scripted format with rare archival footage and intimate interviews – including Liza Minnelli, Andy Warhol, his niece Lesley Frowick, and filmmaker Joel Schumacher – to create a textured, behind-the-scenes look at the famed designer’s life and the friction between his artistic talents and business pressures. Following the film screening, Penn State Great Valley is thrilled to host a conversation with Ballester, Halston’s niece, Lesley Frowick, and Halston's favorite models, Alva Chinn, and Karen Bjornson. Roland BallesterRoland Ballester is a non-fiction film and tv producer. He was the lead producer of the 2019 documentary Halston, a CNN Film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. For Netflix, he originated and produced the 2023 documentary-series MerPeople. Previous credits include The U Part 2 for ESPN’s 30 for 30 series. His next documentary about hummingbird rehabbers will be released in 2024. Along with non-fiction projects in development, he is developing a scripted film and television series. Lesley FrowickLesley Frowick is the niece of fashion designer Halston and Founder of The Halston Archives. She recently established the non-profit scholarship initiative With Love Halston, that partners with the Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation providing grant awards to rising design students at major fashion institutes around the world. Among her many efforts to honor her uncle's legacy, Lesley authored Halston: Inventing American Fashion, co-curated the Halston & Warhol/Silver & Suede traveling exhibit, she was principal Curator of the exhibit Halston Style at the Nassau County Museum of Art and consults on numerous Halston fashion exhibits. Lesley served as Executive Producer of this definitive Halston documentary. Karen BjornsonKaren Bjornson’s career began at age 18 in 1970 when she became Halston’s muse. From 1970 until 1989 she was seen in advertisements and editorial content in newspapers and magazines as well as in television commercials and runway shows. She was on the cover of Newsweek, Cosmopolitan (the Burt Reynolds nude centerfold issue) and Vogue. In 1989 Karen stopped modeling, becoming a stay-at-home mom. In 2002, at age 50, Ralph Rucci convinced her to come back to model in his NY runway show and Paris couture show. She continued with print and runway work until she retired in 2018. Alva ChinnAmongst the many designers that Alva Chinn has worked with are: Stephen Burrows, Halston, Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, Azzedine Alaia, Thierry Mugler, Valentino, Ungaro, Hubert Givenchy, Marc Bohan for Dior, Kenzo, Sonia Rykiel, Zandra Rhodes, Karl Lagerfeld, Issey Miyake, Calvin Klein and Perry Ellis. In September 2023, Alva walked in the Pierre Cardin show in Paris, making her the only model at Versailles 73 to walk for all 10 designers.Along with the most prestigious and influential designers, Alva has done the same with photographers such as Oliviero Toscani, Arthur Elgort, Allays Wickragh, Rico Pullman, Albert Watson, Charles Tracy, Knut Bry. Neal Barr and Jean Pagliuso, etc. She’s appeared in American, British and Italian Vogues, in Italian and American Bazaars, French Elle and Marie Claire, Dépêche Mode, Mademoiselle, GQ, etc. Her latest cover is the May 2023 issue of Town and Country.
