The Beta Beta Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. was the first of the Divine Nine to be chartered in San Antonio, Texas. Chartered on December 26, 1926, the chapter also holds the distinction of being the oldest alumni chapter in the Gulf Coast Region of Phi Beta Sigma. During its 96-year history, the chapter has been a community partner at the International, Regional and State levels of the fraternity.

The chapter counts among its achievements the establishment of the San Antonio Negro Chamber of Commerce (now the Alamo City Black Chamber of Commerce) in 1938, as part of the fraternity’s National Bigger and Better Business program. Throughout its history, members of the chapter have been leaders in the San Antonio community. Among them are Thomas L. Holley, principal founder of the Alamo City Black Chamber of Commerce and the Industrial Engineering department at Prairie View A&M University. Charles A. Whittier, MD, founder of the Whittier Clinic, civil rights leader, and the namesake of the Whittier Medical Society. R. R. Davenport and W. L. Walker, editors of the San Antonio Register weekly newsletter

Today, the chapter’s programming includes locally supporting the Ella Austin Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas, the Leapfrog Foundation for sports and education, and the Elf Louise Christmas Toy Drive. Our national programming includes support for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, March of Dimes, NAACP, Project VOTE, American Heart Month events, V.I.T.A. (volunteer income tax assistance).

The chapter’s signature programs include, the Blue Tuesday business networking events, Sigma Café, Black Spend Initiative – supporting small business, Sigma Got Soul (70/80s themed dance), the Sigma Golf Classic tournament benefiting the Leapfrog Foundation, and the Adopt-A-School reading partnership with San Antonio Youth Literacy, to provide reading assistance and new books to elementary aged children.
