Half-Life Opening Reception

Unbound Visual Arts(UVA), was organized, formed and incorporated in 2012.  It's a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational charity based in Allston-Brighton and is governed by a 17-person Board of Directors and Council of Advisors.We organize independently curated art exhibitions and accompanying programming that encourage learning, engagement, and change. We also organize classes, workshops, lectures, and other learning programs, and have a growing collection of over 100 works of 21st century art. In 2021, we launched our Exhibit Gallery at the Arthaus located in Allston, MA. Dedicated to featuring the work of local artists, it is Allston’s first community art gallery.UVA is committed to supporting artists in the Greater Boston area and beyond. Our exhibitions reflect diverse perspectives and we are dedicated to bringing members of historically marginalized groups to the forefront of our work. We regularly create opportunities for artists who have experienced homelessness to sell and display their work, addressing the gap between the general public and the homeless community.Moreover, we make our offerings accessible to underserved communities by providing free memberships to individuals who are low-income, unemployed, and/or homeless. Our virtual offerings remain accessible to the general public for free on our website and virtual exhibit platforms.We believe that art is an essential service and have organized 75+ exhibitions, in person and virtually. UVA’s exhibitions are characterized by their engagement with crucial cultural and social topics, including race and gender equity, environmental sustainability, and wellness. Exhibitions provide artists with opportunities to showcase and sell their art, and provide the local community with opportunities to enjoy works of visual art while engaging with contemporary social topics.Our mission is to support a diverse community of artists based in the Greater Boston area and beyond.

Please join us for the free, public opening reception of Half-Life, a captivating exhibit featuring artists Madeline Lee, Matthew Okazaki and Maria Fong. The works on view include painting, mixed media collage, photographs, and installation. Note: This event is free and open to the public even if you don't have a ticket — we hope that you'll stop by! Exhibit Statement:Often used to describe radioactive or chemical decay, the term “half-life” takes on alternate meanings through other interpretations presented by three artists: Matthew Okazaki, Madeline Lee, and Maria Fong. “Half-life” interpretations include: decay, both material and non-material; what happens in half a life; a measurement of time linked to fundamental change; halving of identity; being counterpart to something that once existed.Applied to scenes of everyday life, objects of resilience, rituals, and processes of making, the artists explore making meaning out of the passage of time, forging new understandings of ourselves and what makes us whole - or sometimes, just half. Artists:Madeline Lee is a visual artist and collaborator who explores the intersections of identity and place. Her work is based in observing people, environmental shifts and the subtle processes that create our daily lives. She is captivated by: food as storytelling; the creation of home(s); attention; observation and unraveling objectivity; the edges where things meet. Madeline grew up near Cleveland, Ohio and has been based in the Somerville-Cambridge area since 2015. Working in community development by day, Madeline pursues place-based connection in her work and has participated in exhibits through local arts organizations including Unbound Visual Arts (Allston-Brighton/Boston), Piano Craft Gallery (South End/Boston), Mosesian Center for the Arts (Watertown), The Umbrella Arts Center (Concord), and Pao Arts Center (Chinatown/Boston). Madeline has a B.A. from Tufts University in Architectural Studies and Environmental Studies with minors in Studio Art and Urban Studies. Matthew Akira Okazaki (b. Oakland, California) is an artist, designer, and educator based out of Boston, Massachusetts. His research and work centers around a creative practice of “making do.” Through the specific selection of sites, materials, archives, images, and construction techniques, Okazaki embraces the ordinary and readily available in the hopes of uncovering and constructing new meanings and modes of understanding in our everyday lives. Privileging tactics over strategies, his work explores ideas of authorship, memory, identity, and heritage to amplify stories less told. Okazaki is founder of the architecture practice <a href="https://www.fieldofficedesign.com/" title="https://www.fieldofficedesign.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Field Office LLC</a>, and a principal at <a href="https://apbdesign.org/" title="https://apbdesign.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Architecture for Public Benefit</a>, a benefit corporation providing design services for mission-driven organizations in the Greater Boston area. Maria Fong is an artist from Berkeley, California. A 2021 graduate of the BFA program at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, Maria works in hand drawn and stop motion animation, drawing, performance art, and bookmaking. Maria's collaborative artworks explore racialized and politicized spaces, community building, and participatory storytelling. Featured Artwork:At Home by Madeline Lee
