A week long hackathon with an autistic theme run by an autistic Lions Club.

The Sydney Autism Community Lions Club are proud to announce the Hacktistic Hackathon, which is being run to encourage people to learn about the challenges faced by Autistic people, and to empower people on the Autism Spectrum to design and formulate solutions to their problems.You will have one week to come up with a solution for a chance to win cash prizes from a pool of $3,000.Autistic and other neurodivergent individuals are encouraged to register and compete!Whilst we expect interest from technically-minded individuals, Hacktistic is different from most other hackathons, in that we seek talent and solutions from further afield, outside of the traditional Information Technology sphere. We want people of all kinds to compete!You will have opportunities during Hacktistic to meet new people, network with mentors, build new skills... and maybe even help create new and better realities!Hacktistic consists of three distinct parts:1. PresentationThursday 27 May 2021From 6:30PM onwardsOnline via ZoomYou will be in a team of 3-6 people, which needs to be formed and finalised at the Information Session.A judging panel selected by the Sydney Autism Community Lions Club will judge the submissions based on criteria that will be provided and communicated at the Information Session. That&#x27;s an awfully long time for a hackathon! Don&#x27;t they typically run over a weekend?There is no expectation on our part that contestants will be spending every single hour of the competition working on a solution!In fact, we encourage you to take regular breaks, eat properly and get a good night&#x27;s sleep for the duration of the hackathon.We want to create a hackathon experience that&#x27;s accessible in ways that a traditional weekend-long hackathon with its pressure-cooker, no-sleep, all-nighter mode of participation simply does not allow. We feel that a slower pace will make Hacktistic more attractive to neurodiverse individuals, and those who have jobs and other responsibilities.Do I have to be autistic, on the spectrum, neurodivergent, etc. to compete?No, you don&#x27;t. Nor will we be requiring participants to show evidence of their neurodivergent status.However, we do encourage teams to have at least one autistic team member, and you can have more than one such member. Your own lived experience could prove invaluable towards coming up with an amazing solution.We believe that a solution to a problem in the autistic sphere that does not involve autistic input is not a solution at all.Do I have to be in a team in order to compete?Yes, you do. Minimum of three, maximum of six people.Are there any minimum age or residency requirements to enter the event? Participants have to be aged 18 years or older and must be legal residents of Australia.What&#x27;s the refund policy?Registration for Hacktistic is FREE. You are, however, welcome to make a donation to the Sydney Autism Community Lions Club when registering. As this is a donation, and you are not required to pay any money to participate, we will not be refunding donations.You can cancel your registration but please do so as quickly as possible. Having accurate attendance details is crucial. If you made a donation, it will not be refunded.What will the donation money be used for?We are a member club of Lions Clubs International, the world&#x27;s largest volunteer-run service organisation. One hundred percent of all money raised by Lions Clubs worldwide eventually gets reinvested back into the community.To get an idea of some of the causes we have supported, please visit our website at sydneyautismlions.comThe money will NOT go towards any expenses incurred during Hacktistic, up to and including prizes.We are always looking for new ways to spend the money we raise and for people to help us spend that money. Sorry.Can I update my registration information?Yes. It is highly encouraged! Please keep it updated or cancel your registration depending on your situation.Is it OK if the name on my ticket or registration doesn&#x27;t match the person who competes?Please make it match to ensure the event sign-in goes as smoothly as possible.What&#x27;s the problem that we have to solve? What&#x27;s the theme for our solution?The problem area for Hacktistic has not been released yet. We will reveal it at the Information Session. Suffice it to say it will be related to autism. Be sure to keep your eyes out for any clues that we may release closer to the Information Session.Can I attend the Information Session but not participate in the Competition?No, the Information Session is for competitors only.But you are more than welcome to attend the Presentation Session on Thursday the 27th from 6:30pm onwards, where the teams present their solutions to the theme that will be officially announced at the Information Session. We will be creating a separate Eventbrite event for the Presentation Session and will release it soon.Is it required to have the entire team at the presentation?We would need to be made aware if the entire team is not there beforehand or it might be interpreted as lack of participation by one of the team members. Nevertheless, no presentation means no possibility of winning.Can we use third-party tools as part of our solution?Yes! You&#x27;re allowed to use third-party solutions for the wheel in your contraption. Don’t try to reinvent a wheel or gear in your contraption when you only have a week to build the contraption prototype.Any tips for participants?- For those who are technically-minded: learn version control and decide on a tech stack BEFORE the competition.- For those are not technically-minded: don&#x27;t panic! It&#x27;s certainly wise to be part of a team that has a coder, engineer, UX designer, etc. But don&#x27;t let them dominate. Your ideas and contributions are just as valuable.- As soon as you have registered, get onto our Discord server, say hi and start chatting! It&#x27;s a great way to meet potential team members and get inspired. As always, be civil and don&#x27;t expect a response right away.- Remember to use the available mentors at the competition for idea bouncing, design help, etc. They&#x27;ll be lurking on Discord during the competition and you can even book a time with them for a chat. If one mentor cannot help, they&#x27;ll call over another mentor that may.- As a team, it&#x27;s better to overcommunicate than fear about communicating too much and causing misunderstandings that suck up time.- Get proper sleep and don&#x27;t forget to eat.
