Hacking Your Relationships

Double Union is a volunteer-run, non-profit, hacker/maker space and community workshop in San Francisco.   We work together to maintain a comfortable, welcoming environment that centers nonbinary people and women who are trans, cis, intersex, queer, straight, and not-fitting-into-those-labels, no matter what you look like.D﻿ouble Union is only open to non-members during public events.We may abruptly cancel events with no rsvp's.Double Union is currently located at 650 Florida St Unit M, San Francisco.  We are in a ground floor location on the interior courtyard of the block.  It's about 3/4 mile from the 16th St Mission BART station and 1 3/4 mile from the 4th & King Caltrain station.   There is street parking in the surrounding neighborhood, but it is frequently busy.

Join us on April 17, 2017 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at Double Union for a workshop with Dr. Sheila Addison on "hacking your relationships"!
Why do you and your partner get into the same arguments over and over - sometimes about the dumbest things?  Why do your parents still push your buttons and make you feel like a kid, even though you're an adult?  Do you ever wish you could crack the code of that frustrating friction with your coworkers?  In this workshop, long-time couple and family therapist Dr. Sheila Addison will share some of the secrets she's learned from her 20 years in the field.  We'll look at how patterns from the past, along with gender, culture, and other contextual pressures, can trap us in dead-end conflicts that keep everyone unhappy. You'll learn to see these patterns through a new lens, and generate ideas about how to interrupt the cycles that keep your relationships stuck.
This workshop is open DU members, guests, and members of the public with RSVP. We welcome workshop participants of all genders (or no gender)!

More About Sheila: Raised by a feminist single mother in the Midwest, <A HREF="http://www.drsheilaaddison.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr. Sheila Addison</A> was taught early on that women deserve equal opportunities. Interested in politics from a young age, Sheila earned a Bachelors and Masters degree in theater as a way to integrate her politics into her passions. Transitioning into the mental health profession, Sheila focused on issues affecting women-- eventually expanding her education to include the LGBTQ community, people with higher body weights, people in the kink/BDSM community and people of racial or ethnic minority backgrounds. She earned her Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Syracuse University where she wrote and co-taught one of the first academic courses offered regarding LGBT issues in family therapy.  Her training at Syracuse laid the groundwork for her to realize that oppression doesn't just operate along single dimensions like gender or sexuality. As a result, Sheila approaches identity from an intersectional perspective, aiming to address people’s entire physical and emotional experience, with the goal of being a more accountable therapist and teacher. Currently, she offers private practice, supervises interns, trains mental health professionals and clinicians to become more culturally competent, and publishes articles on intersectional therapy with queer couples and multicultural couple therapy. She currently serves as the President-Elect for the Association for Family Therapy of Northern California and was a founding Board Member for TransLifeline, the first crisis hotline for transgender and gender-queer people. She resides in Oakland, California.
