Due to time and space constrains, we unfortunately won't be able to accommodate all teams at the final Hack the Camp, therefore the information requested below is critical to your participation in the final event. Your team's complementary skills are also very important. The finalists will be announced on November 22nd.

These are the questions that we would like for you to answer and use as pointers to guide the development of your concept:

What is the exact refugee or migrant challenge your solution will solve?
What is your technology / media / arts / entrepreneurial based solution to the above challenge?
Which segment of the population could benefit from your solution?
What other organizations already address the same challenges and how is your solution different?
What is the Minimum Viable Product that you will need to prototype in the hack?
Will you be using technologies, for example open source or commercially available projects, datasets, libraries, APIs etc.?
Who are your team members and what are their roles? Do you have software developers, a user experience/interface designer and a business-minded person?
How are you going to test your solution?
What do you expect to accomplish between now and the next hack event in December? Have you divided up and assigned tasks, and established communication mechanisms with each other?

How can we improve living conditions for refugees? How can they access reliable information on their legal status? What kind of opportunities are available or can be created for refugees? How can we tap on the many skills that moving populations bring with them? How can populations in transit and local populations come closer and develop an intercultural dialogue?

These are some of the challenges that Hack the Camp (#HackTheCamp) will attempt to address. Impact Hub Athens, the Onassis Cultural Center and the U.S. Embassy in Athens are joining forces for Hack the Camp, a two-part hackathon on refugee and integration challenges.

#Who

Programmers, designers, social entrepreneurs, humanitarian workers, educators, artists and other interested professionals are invited to work together and find sustainable and scalable solutions for and with refugees and migrants in Greece. Migrant and refugee populations are also invited to participate in the process, voice their concerns, and share their knowledge and expertise.

The hackathon is addressed to people with and without technological skills, and the outcomes can include mobile applications and technology solutions, as well as ideas for non-technology products and services, or cultural and educational platforms. Interested participants can apply as individuals and find partners during the launch event of the hackathon; or they can apply as teams. The hackathon follows a Critical Engineering approach, i.e. finding and “making” a solution to a real world challenge that aims at effecting social change.

#MeetTheHackers

Hack the Camp will be comprised of two events: the Meet the Hackers event will be held on October 21-22, 2016, at Diplareios School, where selected experts will announce the challenges and the methodology of the event, participants will form teams and start brainstorming. Starting from that weekend, and for the next six weeks, the teams will have the opportunity to meet as their schedules allow. They will have access to the Greek and international mentors of the hackathon, who will offer tech skills and advice to teams that need it. Impact Hub Athens will provide space for teams to meet and connect with their mentors. The resulting teams will be able to submit their updated concepts before November 22nd, when the review process begins.

#HackTheCamp

The main Hack the Camp event will take place December 2-4, 2016, at Impact Hub Athens, where the selected participants will prototype their idea and develop it into a sustainable solution, with the help of mentors. During the final day of Hack the Camp, the teams will present their projects and a Judging Panel of experts will decide on the top three teams/hacks. The winners will receive monetary awards, as well as free incubation services at Impact Hub. The teams and hack projects will be judged based on the following criteria: impact, user experience and presentation, sustainability, innovation, and reusability.

Hackathon solutions and outcomes will focus primarily on the refugee and migrant populations currently in Greece, and aid organizations offering services to refugees. Some of the solutions may apply to other groups as well, including long-term migrants and local populations that will benefit of intercultural understanding.

#OpenSource

It is our intention to share all code and other digital assets on the HackTheCamp organization at GitHub, using open licenses, to enable solutions to be developed outside the hackathon event itself, to maximize the benefit to the NGO sector and to form the basis of a community of tech peacebuilders.

#Supporters

Two international organizations with long experience in humanitarian-related hackathons will act as consultants, facilitators and moderators at the events. Creative Associates from the U.S. and International Alert from the UK will be the main facilitators of Hack the Camp.

Microsoft supports actively Hack the Camp by contributing to the monetary prizes, offering technological and entrepreneurial mentoring services to the teams, as well as software and devices, helping towards the success of the initiative.

GFOSS – Open Technologies Alliance within the context of the ongoing collaboration with the Onassis Cultural Center in Athens, actively supports Hack the Camp with demonstrations of open hardware and software while partners of the Open Technologies Alliance will participate in both stages of Hack the Camp and support the participating teams in using collaborative design and programming tools, as well as enable them to share their creations on open collaborative platforms.

Πώς μπορούμε να βελτιώσουμε τις συνθήκες διαβίωσης των προσφύγων; Πώς μπορούν να έχουν πρόσβαση σε αξιόπιστες πληροφορίες; Τι είδους ευκαιρίες ενσωμάτωσης υπάρχουν ή μπορούν να δημιουργηθούν για αυτούς τους πληθυσμούς; Πώς μπορούμε να αξιοποιήσουμε τις πολλαπλές δεξιότητες που φέρνουν μαζί τους; Πώς μπορούν να έρθουν πιο κοντά με τους τοπικούς πληθυσμούς και να αναπτυχθεί ένας ουσιαστικός διαπολιτισμικός διάλογος;

Αυτές είναι μερικές από τις προκλήσεις που θα επιχειρήσουμε να προσεγγίσουμε στη διάρκεια του Hack the Camp (#HackTheCamp). Το Impact Hub Athens, η Στέγη του Ιδρύματος Ωνάση, και η Πρεσβεία των Η.Π.Α. στην Αθήνα ενώνουν τις δυνάμεις τους μέσα από ένα δημιουργικό hackathon για να συνεισφέρουν στην αντιμετώπιση των προκλήσεων του προσφυγικού ζητήματος και των θεμάτων ένταξης.

#Who

Προγραμματιστές, designers, άνθρωποι της κοινωνικής επιχειρηματικότητας, εργαζόμενοι σε ανθρωπιστικές οργανώσεις, εκπαιδευτές, καλλιτέχνες και άλλοι ενδιαφερόμενοι επαγγελματίες ή μη θα εργαστούν σε ομάδες και θα αναζητήσουν βιώσιμες λύσεις για και μαζί με τους πρόσφυγες και μετανάστες στην Ελλάδα. Η συμμετοχή προσφύγων και μεταναστών στη διαδικασία του hackathon είναι ιδιαίτερα σημαντική προκειμένου να παραχθούν λύσεις οι οποίες θα ακουμπούν στις πραγματικές ανάγκες αυτών των ανθρώπων.

Το hackathon απευθύνεται σε ανθρώπους με ή χωρίς τεχνολογικές δεξιότητες, ενώ οι λύσεις που θα παραχθούν μπορεί να περιλαμβάνουν εφαρμογές τεχνολογίας, καθώς και ιδέες για μη τεχνολογικά προϊόντα ή υπηρεσίες, ή ακόμα εκπαιδευτικές και πολιτιστικές πλατφόρμες. Οι ενδιαφερόμενοι μπορούν να δηλώσουν συμμετοχή είτε ατομικά και να αναζητήσουν συνεργάτες κατά τη διάρκεια του πρώτου μέρους του hackathon (Meet the Hackers) ή μπορούν να συμμετάσχουν με την ήδη υπάρχουσα ομάδα τους.

Η προσέγγισή μας έχει ως κεντρικό άξονα την Κριτική Μηχανική (critical engineering), δηλαδή την ανεύρεση και «κατασκευή» μιας άμεσα εφαρμόσιμης λύσης σε ένα υπαρκτό πρόβλημα μέσα από μια καινοτόμο, αλλά και πρακτική προσέγγιση που μπορεί να επιφέρει κοινωνική αλλαγή.

#MeetTheHackers

Το Hack the Camp θα ολοκληρωθεί σε δύο στάδια: στην εκδήλωση Meet the Hackers που θα πραγματοποιηθεί στις 21-22 Οκτωβρίου στη Διπλάρειο Σχολή, θα παρουσιαστούν οι προκλήσεις και η μεθοδολογία του hackathon και στη συνέχεια οι συμμετέχοντες θα δημιουργήσουν ομάδες και θα ξεκινήσουν να δουλεύουν στις αρχικές τους ιδέες. Από εκείνη την ημερομηνία και για τις επόμενες έξι εβδομάδες οι ομάδες θα προετοιμάζονται με τη βοήθεια Ελλήνων και διεθνών ειδικών, οι οποίοι θα τους υποστηρίζουν προσφέροντας την τεχνογνωσία τους, ενώ θα μπορούν να εργάζονται από τον χώρο του Impact Hub Athens. Οι ομάδες που θα προκύψουν θα μπορούν να υποβάλουν την επικαιροποιημένη τους ιδέα προς αξιολόγηση μέχρι τις 22 Νοέμβριου.

#HackTheCamp

Το δεύτερο και τελικό στάδιο του Hack the Camp θα πραγματοποιηθεί στις 2-4 Δεκεμβρίου, στο Impact Hub Athens, όπου οι συμμετέχοντες που θα επιλεγούν θα αναπτύξουν την ιδέα τους σε μια βιώσιμη λύση με τη βοήθεια εξειδικευμένων συμβούλων. Κατά τη διάρκεια της τελευταίας ημέρας του Hack the Camp οι ομάδες θα παρουσιάσουν τα τελικά τους project στην κριτική επιτροπή, η οποία θα αποφασίσει για τις τρεις καλύτερες ομάδες.

Οι νικητές θα λάβουν χρηματικά έπαθλα και υπηρεσίες συμβουλευτικής και υποστήριξης στο Impact Hub Athens. Οι ομάδες και τα τελικά projects θα κριθούν με βάση τα ακόλουθα κριτήρια: αντίκτυπο, χρηστικότητα και παρουσίαση, βιωσιμότητα, καινοτομία και δυνατότητα επαναχρησιμοποίησης (σε παρόμοιες καταστάσεις).

Οι λύσεις που θα παραχθούν κατά τη διάρκεια του Hack the Camp θα εστιάσουν πρωτίστως στους προσφυγικούς και μεταναστευτικούς πληθυσμούς που βρίσκονται στην Ελλάδα καθώς και σε οργανισμούς που προσφέρουν υπηρεσίες σε αυτούς. Κάποιες από τις λύσεις μπορούν να απευθύνονται και σε άλλες ομάδες, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των μεταναστών που βρίσκονται χρόνια στη χώρα μας, αλλά και τοπικούς πληθυσμούς, προάγοντας τον διαπολιτισμικό διάλογο και συνεργασία.

Ο κώδικας αλλά και το συνοδευτικό ψηφιακό υλικό των προτάσεων που θα προκύψουν μέσα από το Hack the Camp, θα αναρτηθούν στο ομώνυμο αποθετήριο στο GitHub, με ανοιχτή άδεια, ώστε να γίνει δυνατή η ανάπτυξη νέων λύσεων πέρα από τα πλαίσια του hackathon.

Το Hack the Camp διοργανώνεται με τη συνεργασία δύο διεθνών οργανισμών με μεγάλη εμπειρία στη διοργάνωση hackathons με ανθρωπιστικό προσανατολισμό: τους Creative Associates από την Αμερική και το International Alert από τη Μεγάλη Βρετανία.

Η Microsoft στηρίζει ενεργά την πρωτοβουλία αυτή, συνεισφέροντας στο χρηματικό έπαθλο, προσφέροντας τεχνολογικό και επιχειρηματικό mentoring στις ομάδες, καθώς και λογισμικό και συσκευές συμβάλλοντας με αυτόν τον τρόπο στην επιτυχή υλοποίηση του Hacκ the Camp.

Ο Οργανισμός Ανοιχτών Τεχνολογιών - ΕΕΛΛΑΚ στο πλαίσιο συνεργασίας που έχει με την Στέγη του Ιδρύματος Ωνάση, υποστηρίζει ενεργά το Hack the Camp, μέσω της παρουσίασης ανοιχτών εργαλείων (software και hardware), ενώ συνεργάτες του Οργανισμού θα συμμετέχουν και στα δύο στάδια του Hack the Camp για την υποστήριξη των συμμετεχόντων στη χρήση εργαλείων συνεργατικής σχεδίασης και προγραμματισμού καθώς και στη διάθεση του περιεχομένου που θα παραχθεί στο πλαίσιο του hackathon μέσω ανοιχτών συνεργατικών πλατφορμών.
