Hack in the Rockies: A Callysto-Innovate Canmore Student Hackathon
Introduce your school-aged children in Canmore to the world of data science by signing them up for our hackathon. They can win prizes!
This in-person hackathon is run by Innovate Canmore and Callysto. Innovate Canmore is a vibrant community of local tech researchers, developers and entrepreneurs offering tech education programs to local kids, youth and adults. Callysto is a federally-funded program that is fostering data science skills (coding, data analysis, and data visualization) in classrooms across Canada. Not familiar with data science? That's OK! Our data science experts will help.

Choose your own adventure:
Students will use open data to solve data science challenges with varying levels of difficulty. The challenges include controlling a robot, assembling the best Pokemon team, and deciding which pets would make the best companions on Mars. To solve these challenges, the students will run data analytics using Python code on the Callysto Hub, a free browser-based platform that allows students to import, study, and visualize all kinds of data.
The hackathon is open to:
Students in grades 5-12 from Canmore and the surrounding area.
How this hackathon will work:
9:00 am to 9:25 am Participants join us at the venue
9:30 am to 9:40 am Introductions, computational thinking and data science
9:40 am - 10:00 am Introduction to Python and dataframes
10:00 am - 10:25 am Introduction to Data Visualization
10:25am-12:00 pm Challenges
LUNCH (Provided)
12:30 pm - 12:50 pm Quick logic activity
12:50 pm - 1:50 pm Work on Challenges
1:50 pm - 2::00 pm Submission Instructions/ Post-hackathon feedback survey
Submission:
- You’re allowed to submit one project individually for judging
- Your project will be judged under specific criteria against the other students who submit
Hackathon venue:
CanMore Together, Unit 105, 717-9th Street, Canmore, AB T1W 2A3.
What you need to join the hackathon
- A fully-charged computer with a Chrome (recommended) internet browser installed. A laptop is preferred, however, a tablet with a peripheral keyboard is also acceptable. If students are participating as a group, they will only need one laptop per group.
- Water bottle
- A Google or Microsoft email account
