This 6-hour workshop will focus on speech sound disorders in their basic and more complex forms in children.

Course Description:This course presents current practices of assessment and treatment of children with Speech Sound Disorder (SSD) using a case-based approach where learners are asked to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios. Activities will promote learner self-reflection and integrate knowledge and practice to advance learning in the area of SSD, especially as related to children with cleft lip and/or palate. Cases will include multicultural and bilingual aspects. Parents will share their experiences with interprofessional care teams to demonstrate the impact of professionals on their families. An otolaryngology surgeon/researcher will also share his experiences as part of an interprofessional cleft lip and palate team, and his approach to medical management and speech-language care.This workshop will be held in Gallagher Theater in the Arizona Student Union. List 3 major concepts and constructs currently framing the assessment and treatment of speech sound system disorders. 2.	Summarize 2 considerations for multicultural and bilingual populations with Speech Sound Disorders. 3.	Describe an interdisciplinary care delivery model for individuals with cleft lip/palate and other craniofacial disorders. 4.	Apply 2 principles of assessment and treatment for Speech Sound Disorders to children with cleft lip/palate. 5.	Explain the role of family members in promoting positive outcomes in children with SSD.SLPs , SLPAs, &amp; AuDs wanting continuing education credit must attend the entire 6-hour workshop. There will be no partial credit allowed.Cost: Please see &#x27;Tickets&#x27;. Please note: Because of the nature of the presentations, speakers will be sharing electronic resource guides and handouts after the workshop.Lunch: Lunch is included with all registrations completed by September 12, 2022. Kate Bunton, PhD, CCC-SLP, is an Associate Professor and Associate Department Head in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at the University of Arizona. Her research interests focus on kinematic, aerodynamic, and acoustic characteristics of normal and disordered speech, correlates of speech intelligibility, and issues of normal and disordered speech motor control. She teaches courses in the graduate program related to Speech Sound Disorders, Stuttering, Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Disorders, Counseling, and Professional Issues. Karen Guilmette, MS, CCC-SLP, is an associate clinical professor and speech-language pathologist with SLHS and a former Clinical Faculty member in the Department of Communication Disorders at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia and a Master of Science from the University of Arizona. Karen has worked in hospital, school, community, and university settings. Her clinical interests include multicultural and bilingual populations, assistive technology, transition to post-secondary, and student advocacy. Karen is the coordinator of SLHS' Multicultural Bilingual Certificate Program.Financial disclosures: Ms. Guilmette is employed by the University of Arizona where she receives a salary.Nonfinancial disclosures: Ms. Guilmette has no nonfinancial relationships to disclose.

Elizabeth Guyette, MS, CCC-SLP, BCS-CL, is an assistant clinical professor and a bilingual (English/Spanish) board-certified speech-language pathologist with 15 years of experience in multiple settings, including outpatient clinics and children’s hospitals. She completed a year-long LEND fellowship with the UC Davis MIND Institute in 2019-2020 to expand her knowledge base regarding neurodevelopmental disorders. Interests include working with diverse populations, fluency disorders, speech sounds disorders, and feeding and swallowing disorders. Jonathon Skirko, MD, MHPA, MPH, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose, and Throat) and the Director of the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology. He is also the Medical Director of the Cleft and Craniofacial Program at Banner – University Medicine Tucson. Dr Skirko is a skilled clinician with a passion for caring for children with complex craniofacial and aerodigestive disorders, particularly children with cleft lip and/or cleft palate. Additionally, he provides broad clinical care and innovative treatments in advanced pediatric otolaryngology. Dr. Skirko is a Surgeon-Scientist with funded research from several institutes. He created a quality of life questionnaire for children with velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), a cleft related speech problem. This instrument (the VELO) is used by cleft centers across the country and has been translated into eight languages. He has awards and grants by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research and Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). Both projects work to advance clinical research for young children with Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS), a rare craniofacial abnormality.
