Overview

Are you looking for a way to incorporate healthy lifestyle choices into your routine? Join UF/IFAS Extension Seminole County to learn all about food and healthy living from farm to fork. This program will take a bigger picture look at wellness and focus on topics within agriculture and our local food system.

Dates: 10AM-1PM on 4/19, 4/26, 5/3, 5/10, and 5/17

This class meets once a week on Fridays 10AM-1PM from April 19th to May 17th. Over the course of 5 weeks, we will have a variety of hands-on learning opportunities, field trips, food tasting, and fun take-home activities. During each class, we will prepare and eat food related to that day's topics. Participants will also get to take home lots of goodies including a potted herb container that they build during the class.

The cost to attend all 5 classes is only $50 total! Registration includes all 5 sessions, materials, and a meal at every class. Registration will close on April 17th at 11:59PM.

Schedule

  • 4/19 Welcome to Wellness. Learn all about wellness, local food, staying safe in the kitchen and take a guided mindfulness hike in a local natural area*.
  • 4/26 All About Livestock. Learn about the cattle industry in Florida, types of meat and meat alternatives, honeybees as livestock and more!
  • 5/3 Great Grains and the Farm. Learn about grains, the nutritional value of different types of grains, the history of production in the US, composting and more!
  • 5/10 Veggies and Herbs. Learn about the food we eat, cooking with herbs, both traditional and hydroponic gardening techniques for growing food at home and more!
  • 5/17 As Sweet As Fruit. Learn about different fruits grown in Florida, the basics of plant propagation, how to propagate some easy to grow fruit at home, and take a trip to a local farm*.

Other Information

* You will be responsible for your own transportation to our two field trip destinations. All trips are within a 15 minute drive from the classroom, pending no location conflicts or severe weather. During our field trips, we will be outside walking on a variety of terrain. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and attire, and bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses too!

Inflammatory and inappropriate actions will not be tolerated. We reserve the right to remove any participant who is disruptive or distracting to others in the meeting.

Cancellation policy: Classes are subject to cancellation if a minimum number of attendees are not registered in advanced of the event. If class is cancelled you will receive a notification, and a refund confirmation to the e-mail that is provided during the registration process.
