About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

Integral to almost every religion or belief from ancient times right up to the present day, the spiritual quest of pilgrimage has brought its community of followers together with the aim of strengthening one’s belief and/or the group's collective goals. How did this phenomenon spanning across civilizations get started, and what has allowed it to endure? It's time to uncover the stories, sacred spaces, and routes behind one of humanity's oldest and timeless traditions.

Join New York Adventure Club for a three-part series that delves into the rich tapestry of pilgrimage from the dawn of civilization to contemporary times. In Part One: On the Road to Rome, we'll chart the evolution of pilgrimage in Rome from the 1st Century BC to the 18th Century AD, exploring how these journeys have left an indelible mark on both the city and those who travel its paths.

Led by archaeologist, heritage expert, and Egyptologist Stacey Anne Bagdi, this virtual journey through the bustling streets of the eternal city of Rome will include:

  • An overview of the concept of pilgrimage and its significant evolution over centuries
  • Exploring the roots of pilgrimage during antiquity in Rome, highlighting the fusion of Greek and Egyptian influences
  • The rise of ancestral pilgrimage and its significance from the 1st Century BC to the 2nd/4th centuries AD
  • A deep dive into the growth of pilgrimage and the papacy during the 4th and 5th centuries AD, focusing on sites related to Saints Peter and Paul
  • An examination of the medieval era, where "Rome-Seekers" faced numerous challenges on their path to the holy city
  • Understanding the allure of pilgrimage to Rome, the motivations behind it, and the contrasting views on its value during the Medieval period
  • The role of Rome in promoting pilgrimage through the forgiveness of sins and the introduction of the Jubilee Year
  • How pilgrimage has transformed in the modern era and Rome's continued draw as a pilgrimage destination, beyond religious boundaries, into tourism

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Stacey — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
