About this event

  • 6 hours 30 minutes

Travel in comfort aboard Metro North to visit Croton Point Park, a beautiful 500-acre park on a peninsula on the Hudson River, about one hour north of the city. The park is rich in natural and human history - it has the oldest native american oyster shell middens in the northeast, revealing that it was inhabited as long as 7,000 years ago; today, the park has a wonderful mix of forest, wetlands, and grassland. The grasslands are atop a hill formed by a former landfill, and are home to hard-to-find breeding bird species such as Indigo Bunting, Grasshopper Sparrow, Bobolink, and Eastern Meadowlark. The woodlands nearby are home to breeding Great Horned Owl, Willow Flycatcher, and Orchard Oriole, as well as the more expected common summer species.

Bring lunch for a picnic in one of the river-side pavilions. Includes about three miles of walking over paved and gravel paths.

Meet at the clock in Grand Central Station at 8:30am to allow for an 8:50am departure.

Round-trip Metro North fare ($20.50) not included in trip price.

Gabriel Willow has been a lover of nature his whole life. Raised in rural Maine, he followed his passion for wild places and wildlife - particularly birds - to Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Vermont and southern Mexico, and earned a degree in ecology. In 2003, he found nature in the least likely of places: New York City.

He’s been here ever since, working with the Prospect Park Audubon Center, NYC Audubon, the Bryant Park Corporation, Wave Hill, Lincoln Center, and other organizations and cultural institutions, helping fellow New Yorkers experience the same incredible thrill of discovering interesting wildlife in the midst of the city. His winter harbor ecology tours were called "The Best Thing About Winter in NYC" by Time Out New York , and his self-designed eco-cruises and nature tours have been written up in The New York Times, The New Yorker, New York Magazine, and more.
