About this event

  • 3 hours 30 minutes

After one and a half years of living in the hospital, nine cycles of chemo, 15 surgeries, endless needles, emotional and physical pain, on her last day of chemo, Elana Koenig was the happiest person in the world. But when she looked around the hospital at every kid who was suffering, she realized that other children are going through the torture that had just ended for her. Elana decided to start her foundation—Koenig Childhood Cancer Foundation—with her sister and family, and they have been giving back and helping other children diagnosed with cancer so that they can be spared the pain that she felt. Elana show’s them emotional support and financial help so that they can fight together with their parents, and so the children can stand up for themselves.

Crazy Socks is KCCF’s signature gift bag event, inspired by founder Elana Koenig’s personal experience undergoing cancer treatment. While battling a rare bone cancer called Ewing’s sarcoma, Elana decided she was tired of grey hospital socks. Why socks? They’re warm, colorful, and reassuring. It’s a simple way to make a child feel more comfortable during cancer treatment.

Today, KCCF and our partners have put together hundreds of gift bags that include “crazy,” non-slip socks ― along with other thoughtfully chosen treats, toys, and messages of encouragement.

On Friday, May 17th, Grassi volunteers will put together Crazy Sock Gift Bags to be deliver to local hospitals in New York!
