Grain oriented and non-oriented electrical steels

University of the West of EnglandStoke Gifford, England
Thursday 14 May  •  19:30 - 21:30
Overview

Join us for a technical lecture on grain oriented & non-oriented electrical steels!

University of West of England

Room 3Z015

Coldharbour Lane, Bristol, BS16 1QY

Talk Summary:

Electrical steels account for approximately 1% of the world’s steel production and are a key requirement of our industrial society, vital in most electromagnetic components used in generation, distribution and utilisation of electrical energy including EV motors. Electrical steels are all around us in our daily lives and they are usually taken for granted. Electrical steels are produced in two main families, Grain Oriented (GO) and Non-Oriented (NO) with a range of demands and market pressures that call for improvements in magnetic and physical properties, reduction in environmental impact and cost competitiveness usually in parallel. This talk will cover GO and NO production, properties, applications, and challenges.

About the speaker:

Dr Fiona Robinson is Principal Metallurgist at ENODA Ltd with experience in electrical steels, other metals and materials R&D, and processing technologies. Fiona has industrial, research, academic and consulting experience of non-oriented and grain oriented electrical steels, process and product development, data analytics and problem solving. Fiona holds undergraduate and PhD degrees in Metallurgy & Materials Engineering together with a specialist MBA in Technology Management. She is a Fellow of IOM3, Chair of their Energy Materials Steering Committee, and the 2025 recipient of the IOM3 T B Marsden Professional Medal.

Who we are:

The West of England Metals and Materials Association (WEMMA) are affiliated to Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3). It aims to provide a service to all materials professionals in the West of England by organising talks and events and providing a focus for discussion. WEMMA lectures are accredited for professional development by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
