Good Fire and Biochar  Workshop

Starting as a permaculture-informed response to the trauma of a single day, the Camp Fire Restoration Project began immediately following 2018's devastating Camp Fire in Butte County, CA.  Survivors and allies who felt passionately that regenerative solutions for rebuilding were needed came together and organized with support from partner organizations.  Now including collaborations with Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) educators and the creation of a local composting hub (Paradise Community Compost), CFRP is moving from disaster response to becoming a long-term resource for ecosystem resiliency.

Camp Fire Restoration Project (CFRP) is absolutely thrilled to be offering an amazing in-person workshop, all about the idea and practices of what we're now calling "GOOD FIRE"!!Worldwide, but especially here in California, many of us are in the midst of a huge turning, a rethinking of past fire practices, land management, and the reconsideration of ancient indigenous knowledge. CFRP is proud to be gathering an incredible group of all-star experts on these topics, and we plan on having a full, information-rich workshop during this one-day gathering in Paradise, CA!This workshop aims to:<ol><li>Increase participants' knowledge of cultural fire, prescribed fire, and biochar and how that can be beneficial for cultural resources, forest health and community health.</li><li> Show how good fire can be used to control invasive species and increase the presence of fire-adapted native plants</li><li> ﻿Provide information and hands-on experience on how biochar is created and why it is so valuable for soil health and carbon sequestration</li><li>Build community while advocating for best practices in forest health and management</li><li>Local agencies will present on volunteer opportunities to work with community members to reduce fire risk.</li></ol>We have an all-star lineup of presenters: <ul><li>Z﻿eke Lunder - pyro-geographer, founder of Deer Creek Resources, and host of "The Lookout"</li><li>A﻿li Meders-Knight - member of the Mechoopda Tribe and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) Master Practitioner - TEK Chico</li><li>Dallas Koller - coordinates Butte County's Prescribed Burn Association (PBA) through the BC Resource Conservation District</li><li>Logan Krahenbuhl - Plumas County Fire Safe Council, Prescribed burn association coordinator</li><li>S﻿teve Feher - Butte Fire Safe Council and member of the Biochar Coalition</li><li>Tabor Teachout - The Voice of Biochar and member of the Biochar Coalition</li><li>K﻿en Scherer - K Organics and member of the Biochar Coalition</li><li>L﻿auren de Terra - Butte Fire Safe Council Education and Outreach Coordinator</li></ul>W﻿e will also hear from folks from the Butte County Fire Safe Council and Paradise Recreation Parks District to learn about local initiatives and ways to get involved.This event will be outdoors. Please dress appropriately.T﻿here will be a hands-on biochar demonstration (which will also help us stay warm).
