What is our relationship with alcohol in 2020?

It's a funny thing for a bar to ask, or do. Especially ours, one that built a reputation on intentional cocktails, thoughtful liquor selection, and not serving a lick of food (besides Cheetos, that is). But we thought it was important enough to talk about how we talk about alcohol, given our role in providing it and often celebrating it. On average, drinking in the United States <a href="https://www.samhsa.gov/data/sites/default/files/cbhsq-reports/NSDUHNationalFindingsReport2018/NSDUHNationalFindingsReport2018.pdf" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">steadily rises</a> every year, even as another trend takes shape: that of more casual abstainers.We're gathering some brilliant minds to discuss why this is happening, its effects on our dining and social culture, and what the role of a bar should be in this decade. When you remove alcohol from the equation, do social interactions get better? How do we respect and welcome people who make different decisions about how they choose to drink or not drink? And will it last?

Julia Bainbridge is an editor who has worked at Condé Nast Traveler, Bon Appétit, Yahoo Food, and Atlanta Magazine, and a James Beard Award-nominated writer whose stories have been published in Food &amp; Wine, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and Playboy, among others. She also focuses on social disconnection in her podcast, <a href="https://www.thelonelyhour.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">The Lonely Hour</a>. Her book about nonalcoholic drinks, Good Drinks, will be published by Ten Speed Press this fall.Dr. David Frenz is a physician, executive, and <a href="https://doctorfrenz.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">mental health provider</a> specializing in addiction medicine. Recognized as a ‘Top Doctor’ in his specialty, he also serves as Allina Health’s Medical Director, providing clinical direction for addiction treatment programs to impact a greater population in our region. He has abstained from alcohol for more than 15 years.Passionate about food from early childhood, Peder Schweigert attended The French Culinary Institute in New York City, worked as a culinary producer for Top Chef, and cooked at Alinea Restaurant in Chicago before joining the opening team at <a href="http://www.marvelbar.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Marvel Bar</a>. In 2010, he won Iron Bartender after less than a year working with spirits, and is now Marvel’s General Manager. He has abstained from drinking alcohol for almost 4 years.Our moderator Jana Shortal has worked as a journalist for KARE 11 News for 17 years. She graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia a very long time ago and had it not been for a persistent journalism professor would have spent her adult life driving the Wienermobile. Jana has won six regional Emmy Awards.
