What is a Swimulation?
Our GoFish! Swimulation is an embodied experience that shifts mindsets in a way that can't be done with data and logic alone. The experience stays with you, helping you work more effectively across differences.
At its core, it is a rich simulation in which participants make decisions and strive to complete tasks in culturally diverse environments. Participants uncover assumptions and the merits of different working styles.
The process provides a starting point to reflect deeply on systemic cultural blockers that hold us back from working better together. Here are some of the benefits of running a Swimulation with your team:
- Improve collaboration, engagement, and co-creation
- Improve productivity and interactivity between people from different mindsets
- Find where to start in co-creating the culture you all want
- A rare opportunity for deep reflection as a team and as an individual
- Create an environment where people can celebrate the diversity of perspectives and yet still have a common language to collaborate.
The full GoFish! Swimulation involves 20-100 participants in a 2 half-day process within an organisation. The Swimulation can be applied as a stand-alone, or it can be applied as part of our longer Learning Lab process. It is a very powerful tool because it is embodied, felt through the actual experience of it, and exposes various issues that normally are hidden in the ice block under water.
Because the Swimulation is quite different from most known interventions it can be quite daunting for leaders or HR to commit a group of 20-100 people without a clear understanding or experience of its power. For this reason, we occasionally run free-of-charge Open Swimulation, to enable a few representatives within an organisation to participate and get a sense of what the swimulation does. They can then see if it is something that is appropriate for their organisation.
The Open Swimulation only involves one of the two half days, and shortened to two hours. It is open for anyone within an organisation who is considering applying the full swimulation in their organisation, as well as for coaches, facilitators or consultants who are considering using it as part of their program.
Why this matters
Our world requires a new type of leadership and a different way of thinking about how we work together.
As climate crises worsens, war rages, the threat of pandemics increases, financial instability rails and many other challenges threaten our society, many people are becoming aware that the system that brought us a certain degree of prosperity and security is no longer working. In particular the way we work and are structured in our organisations needs a major rethink, as shown by the recently released Gallop State of the Global Workplace 2023 Report. This shows a drop in the global engagement rates to 23% of the workforce actively engaged (13% in the UK), while 77% are disengaged (15% actively disengaged).
Many leaders are aware of the need to change and reinvent ourselves, but do not really know what to change and how to go about it. It is clear that something more than a click on a switch, or a conventional organisational change programme is needed. A fundamental mindset shift is needed and this must involve the wisdom and diversity of the workforce within organisations. The way collective wisdom is drawn, and new ways of working co-created, needs to come from within. The UN Sustainability Goals has recently launched the Inner Development Goals, which tries to draw attention to the kind of inner work and reinvention that is required.
In short the whole workforce needs to be involved organisation by organisation, just when engagement rates are falling drastically. This calls for a radical reexamination of ourselves and of our organisations from the inside out. Our GoFish! Swimulation is an embodied (lived, experienced) tool that can help organisations start that reflection and reinvention process. It reveals the personal and organisational assumptions and cultural artifacts that make us do things the way we do. This sets the stage for an organisation to reflect, at much deeper levels, on how it operates. It's through this continuous inner development work we're able to overcome blockers and co-create more positive and engaged ways of working together.
