About this event

Simple apologetics for everyday people. This class will run for 8 weeks and will focus on problem passages in Genesis 1-8. Open to everyone.

Apologetics is important and, too often, people make it more complicated than it needs to be. Apologetics is a reasoned defense of the Christian faith. The course will cover from creation to the flood. My approach will be different than the usual approach to apologetics, as I strive to reason in favor of the biblical story for normal, everyday people who aren’t world-class scholars.

From the creation of the world to the great flood, the Bible presents a story that is sometimes difficult to believe—especially in light of the claims many modern-day scientists make about history. Join us for 8 weeks this summer as we answer questions like, “Does the scientific age of the earth contradict the age of the earth according to the Bible?” and “Why do most scientists seem to believe there was not a global flood?”

People form all sorts of opinions based on their interpretation of the story presented in the Bible. They talk about contradictions and impossibilities. When it comes down to it, I think a simple and careful reading of the text solves a vast majority of the “problems” people claim it has. From the beginning, God has been showing people that our wisdom is foolishness compared to His.

In this series, I am going to take an expository approach to apologetics rather than a scientific or philosophical approach like many modern-day apologists. It is my opinion that the best defense against Christianity’s critics is the simple act of knowing our Bible. When we take this approach, we do more than merely stave off God’s opponents; we actually know God more—an effort that has everlasting rather than mere momentary value.

Each session will last 1 hour with 15 minutes dedicated to answering questions presented at the end of the previous session and 45 minutes dedicated to the topic of that current session. It will be free, casual, and coffee will be available.

Week 1: Creation

Is Genesis 1 a literal historical account?

How do we think about Genesis 1 in light of the timeline presented by some scientists?

How can light on the earth precede the creation of the sun, stars, and moon?

Did people really believe there was a dome of water over the earth?

Week 2: A Second Creation

Why does Genesis 2 present a different order of creation than Genesis 1?

Can we trust what the Bible says if it presents an incoherent story?

Is the Bible a misogynistic book, having man created first and woman created for the man?

Week 3: The Life of Human Beings

Do we really believe people could live so long?

Did God lie to Adam about the consequence of his sin?

Week 4: Talking Snakes

What is the age of the earth according to the Bible?

How do we reconcile earth’s biblical age with the historical claims of many scientists?

Is Genesis 3 an etiology, or is there something else going on?

Week 5: The Problem of Population

How were there other nations by the time Cain is exiled if Adam and Eve were the only two people starting out?

Did God create other people elsewhere besides Adam and Eve?

Did Adam and Eve have children prior to the Fall?

Would this at all affect the implications of original sin?

Week 6: Demigod Giants

Were angels sexual creatures capable of inseminating human women?

Was Moses copying the style of outlandish Mesopotamian myths?

Weeks 7 and 8: The Flood

Instagram Debates vs. Actual Critical Thinking

Is there empirical evidence or lack thereof in favor of a global flood?

What part does worldview play in believing historical events?

Examining the evidence and reading the Bible sincerely.
