In that previous era of time and space before 2020, we had the pleasure of hosting this band Go By Ocean here at the Crazy Horse on two occasions. Whether it was then or now, it’s not that common for us to have more emotional indie rock bands here. People want to dance, right? Well, when you hear these songs written and sung by bandleader Ryan McCaffrey, it transports the typical listener to an alternate dimension where the pure beauty and inspiration of songcraft washes away the outside world. Go back to the band’s 2017 album “Sun Machine” and listen to songs like “Ring Around the Sun” and “Off the Grid.” They ooze with the feeling of limitless possibility.
Fast forward years ahead and McCaffrey has continued to refine his songwriting with Go By Ocean. In recent times the band has been gaining momentum, welcoming more of the Bay Area’s top artists into the mix. Good news: the music is more danceable these days. The indie rock vibe has expanded into realms of jammy jazz and funky folk. The element of soul and emotional impact has only grown deeper.
On this occasion, we are thrilled to see how the band sounds with the addition of Reed Mathis on lead guitar. Reed is a Crazy Horse favorite who has performed here with Electric Beethoven, Bone Diggers Paul Simon Tribute and Band Beyond Description. He’s also known for his work with Billy and the Kids, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey and Steve Kimock. He’s a relentless innovator who elevates every project he’s involved with to unforeseen heights.
