Time: 8:00 am (at outing start point) - 11:00 am

Location: Sapillo Box Canyon (specific directions will be emailed to registrants)

Carpooling from Silver City: Be at the Silver City Visitor Center parking lot (201 N Hudson St) in time to depart at 7:00 am. Ride-sharing not guaranteed.

Outing Leader: Dave McDonald. Dave has been a birder since college. He retired three years ago from the University of Wyoming, where his major research focused on lek-mating Neotropical birds called manakins. He loves birding in the SW corner of NM.

What to wear/bring: Participants are asked to wear closed-toed shoes and a hat. Bring ample water, snacks, and binoculars (additional binoculars available). No pets.

Possible birds: Wild Turkey, Hummingbirds (Rivoli’s, Black-chinned, Broad-tailed), Hawks (Cooper’s, Red-tailed), Woodpeckers (Acorn, Hairy, Northern Flicker), Flycatchers (Western Wood-Pewee, Western, Black & Say’s Phoebes, Ash-throated), Kingbirds (Cassin’s, Western), Vireos (Plumbeous, Warbling), Jays (Mexican, Pinyon, Steller’s, Woodhouse’s Scrub), Swallows (Violet-green, Northern Rough-winged, Barn, Cliff), Nuthatches (Pygmy, White-breasted), Wrens (Bewick’s, Canyon, House, Rock), Sparrows (Chipping, Lark, Rufous-crowned, White-crowned), Spotted Towhees, Warblers (Black-throated Gray, Grace’s, Lucy’s, MacGillivray’s, Virginia, Common Yellowthroat, Yellow), Tanagers (Hepatic, Summer, Western), Black-headed Grosbeaks

Accessibility info: We'll walk from the parking area to the trailhead (about 1/4 mi) along a flat paved road. The trail is packed dirt with some intermittment uphill climbs. Open and shaded sections throughout. No water or restrooms available. (Restrooms available at Lake Roberts, a few miles east of the trailhead)
