Gila 100: Bird Outing at Railroad Canyon with Susan Mittelstadt

Date: Tuesday, May 28

Time: 8:00 am (at the trailhead) - 11:00 am

Location: Railroad Canyon. Situated in the Black Range Mountains. Railroad Canyon Campground is located east of Silver City on the north side of New Mexico Highway 152 between mile markers 27 and 28.

Carpooling from Silver City: Be at the Grant County Business and Conference Center parking lot (3031 US-180) in time to depart at 7:00 am. Ride-sharing not guaranteed.

Outing Leader: Susan Mittelstadt. Susan is happy to lead you on a bird outing where you will likely know more than her. She relishes the collective doing their best to have fun and find birds.

What to wear/bring: Participants are asked to wear closed-toed shoes and a hat. Bring ample water, snacks, and binoculars (additional binoculars available for use). No pets.

Possible birds: Woodpeckers (Acorn, Downy, Hairy, Northern Flicker), Flycatchers (Western, Olive-sided, Wood-Pewee, Hammond’s, Western, Black Phoebe), Vireos (Cassin’s, Plumbeous, Warbling), Nuthatches (White-breasted, Pygmy, Red-breasted), Brown Creeper, Wrens (Bewick’s, Canyon, House, Rock), Thrushes (American Robin, Hermit), Tanagers (Summer, Western, Hepatic), Steller’s Jay, Mountain Chickadee, Pine Siskin, Warblers (Black-throated Gray, Grace’s, Orange-Crowned, Virginia’s, Common Yellowthroat, Painted Redstart, Red-faced, Wilson’s, Yellow, Yellow-rumped)

Accessibility info: Out-and-back trail with multiple creek crossings. Clearly-marked and narrow trail. Uneven terrain (sand, dirt, rocks, gravel) throughout. mostly gentle slope with some dips and climbs. Mostly shaded. Open gravel parking lot. Vault restroom (wheelchair-accessible) at trailhead. No drinking water available. No cell service.
