Rembrandt. Vermeer. Frans Hals. Jan Steen. Rachel Ruysch. Jacob van Ruisdael.
While you've probably come across the paintings of these famed Dutch master artists in some top museum or gallery throughout the world, what exactly makes them and their works so significant? And though each focused in different art styles, how did they make the ordinary people and objects depicted in their paintings evoke such joy? It's time for a deep dive into the greatest artists from 17th century Netherlands, and how to fully appreciate their lives and legacies when encountering their work today.
Join New York Adventure Club for a six-part series that explores the biggest names in art from the Dutch Golden Age (1575-1675). In Part Six: Jacob van Ruisdael, we'll uncover the life and legacy of the Dutch Golden Age's most famous landscape painter, Jacob van Ruisdael, who could turn the flat landscape of the Netherlands into majestic, brooding places of great beauty and drama.
Led by art historian, museum educator, and NYC lecturer Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff, this art-centric virtual journey through some of Dutch history's greatest artists will include:
- An introductory to the biography of Jacob Isaacks van Ruisdael, artist and doctor (!)
- His varied oeuvre of landscapes, cityscapes, and seascapes
- The influence on his works from his travels to Germany and Scandinavia
- Ruisdeal’s merging of fantasy and reality
- The art market in his native city of Haarlem and the role of his artist family, as well as his later years in Amsterdam
- The important influence of his work on later landscape artists
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Mariska — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!

About Mariska
Mariska is a Social Psychologist by trade but took up her love for the arts again after the birth of her children.
Heavily pregnant with number 3, Mariska finished her MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, in Dutch Baroque Art. Soon after this she was lucky enough to lecture for the most wonderful group of students. She decided this was what she wanted to do and set up Art Historical London offering art historical lectures, courses, tours, travel and events from London and Amsterdam, and since 2020 online.
Fully accredited in the UK to teach the over 16, Mariska also lectures for NAFDAS, an arts education society with members in the UK and Mainland Europe, New Zealand and Australia.
