Rembrandt. Vermeer. Frans Hals. Jan Steen. Rachel Ruysch. Jacob van Ruisdael.
While you've probably come across the paintings of these famed Dutch master artists in some top museum or gallery throughout the world, what exactly makes them and their works so significant? And though each focused in different art styles, how did they make the ordinary people and objects depicted in their paintings evoke such joy? It's time for a deep dive into the greatest artists from 17th century Netherlands, and how to fully appreciate their lives and legacies when encountering their work today.
Join New York Adventure Club for a six-part series that explores the biggest names in art from the Dutch Golden Age (1575-1675). In Part Four: Jan Steen, we'll dig into the comical scenes of dissolute households, merrymakers at inns, quack doctors, and lovesick girls of artist Jan Steen, which have the power to both make us laugh and reflect on our own moral behavior.
Led by art historian, museum educator, and NYC lecturer Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff, this art-centric virtual journey through some of Dutch history's greatest artists will include:
- An introductory to the biography of Jan Steen, from his education to life and aspirations
- The big misconception that his paintings represent his own character or life
- The art market in his native city of Leiden and The Hague, Delft, Warmond, and Haarlem
- A close look at Steen’s comic genre, but also his occasional portraits and history scenes (usually of a traditional biblical theme)
- The importance of humor in Dutch 17th century art and life
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Mariska — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!

About Mariska
Mariska is a Social Psychologist by trade but took up her love for the arts again after the birth of her children.
Heavily pregnant with number 3, Mariska finished her MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, in Dutch Baroque Art. Soon after this she was lucky enough to lecture for the most wonderful group of students. She decided this was what she wanted to do and set up Art Historical London offering art historical lectures, courses, tours, travel and events from London and Amsterdam, and since 2020 online.
Fully accredited in the UK to teach the over 16, Mariska also lectures for NAFDAS, an arts education society with members in the UK and Mainland Europe, New Zealand and Australia. She is a lecturer with the public program of the Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, and can provide live, online and recorded lectures for groups or individuals.
