Rembrandt. Vermeer. Frans Hals. Jan Steen. Rachel Ruysch. Jacob van Ruisdael.
While you've probably come across the paintings of these famed Dutch master artists in some top museum or gallery throughout the world, what exactly makes them and their works so significant? And though each focused in different art styles, how did they make the ordinary people and objects depicted in their paintings evoke such joy? It's time for a deep dive into the greatest artists from 17th century Netherlands, and how to fully appreciate their lives and legacies when encountering their work today.
Join New York Adventure Club for a six-part series that explores the biggest names in art from the Dutch Golden Age (1575-1675). In Part Three: Frans Hals, we'll appreciate the unequaled joviality and spontaneity of artist Frans Hals, best known for his masterly, confident brush strokes and brilliance of capturing his love for his sitters.
Led by art historian, museum educator, and NYC lecturer Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff, this art-centric virtual journey through some of Dutch history's greatest artists will include:
- A historical, religious, and socio-economic background on the 17th century city of Haarlem
- What we know about Frans Hals, from where he lived to his day-to-day
- The tradition of portrait painting, and how Frans Hals' evolution in the craft compares to other artists of his day
- Background on some of his sitters and his relationship with his patrons
- A look at his use of symbolism and iconography
- His love for entertainers, entertainment, comedy and genre painting, and how his works evoke a sense of connection with people who lived 300 years ago
- The admiration Impressionists had of Frans Hals and the quotations of his paintings in their own works
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Mariska — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
