Green Conversations 2024

You are welcome to take part in these informal monthly meetings by the St Johns Society. Started in 2022 they enable our community of friends to keep up to date about the big, long term changes that will affect everyone on Earth.

Active InvolvementWhat can we do that would help the next generations survive and live well? As individuals it is easy to feel insignificant and powerless. But don't forget, we greatly outnumber the politicians who seem to be asleep at the wheel. We must work together, so the first step is to feel you are part of something bigger than yourself. POWER IN OUR HANDS will share practical ways in which local communities can transform themselves and reclaim their power. You will hear a succession of experts outlining ways to make our lifestyles more regenerative and efficient. Dorothy will offer some perspectives on the 'big picture' and Amelia and Phuong will explain how to make specific technical improvements to our domestic energy supplies and offering access to retrofit services. All of these processes will make future lifestyles cheaper and more fun. Sign up for the 8th July!

Agenda

David is a tireless innovator and pioneer in citizen support, racial harmony and environmental wellbeing. He is Director of the Ideas Foundation Trust and also leads POWER IN OUR HANDS. David is the Company Secretary and Founder of the Ideas College. He has been a community education manager and youth arts facilitator for over 25 years. In 1993 David established Tolerance in Diversity (TiD), winner of the Stop Racism 2000 Internationally Award. He was part of the team that developed the Tower Hamlets Summer University and Summer Education UK, which was rolled out nationally in 1998. He developed two Millennium Award Schemes, helping 196 young people to develop and sustain youth projects across the UK. He is married to historian and author Dr Kate Murphy and has three children. In January 2000 he was awarded the OBE.

Welcome to Power in Our Hands

Amelia is Outreach Officer for SELCE (South East London Community Energy). She works at the intersection of social and climate justice to support households in future-proofing their homes. She is currently leading on outreach for a government-funded programme to encourage the uptake of domestic retrofit in Lewisham and Greenwich.

Phuong will describe some innovative energy generation products including portable solar panels suitable for outdoor use. Her background in business and management means she understands financial systems as well as some of the technological aspects of energy production. She has raised hundreds of million USD in the last ten years for renewable energy and definancing projects. She also applies her training and skills in management to help organisations to achieve their aims. Phuong is a member of Green Angels Syndicate and currently working with The British Library, Lewisham Council, Energy communities Bath and South East London. Portable Solar Energy

Dorothy’s background is in IT, moving from software development to project and programme management.  As her concerns about the climate and nature crises grew, she founded GreengageIT - a tech start-up providing solutions which helped businesses reduce the climate impact of their IT infrastructure.  Focussing on climate communication, she then completed an MA in Journalism at Birkbeck College, where she researched barriers to climate journalism. 

 With support from Power In Our Hands, she’s preparing to launch an independent media outlet based in Lewisham - Salamander SE News.  Salamander will publish fact-checked community news with a climate/environment lens.  We’re looking for others to get involved, as journalists and supporters - please come along to find out more.
