About Karen Burton

She is co-founder and CEO Space Lab Development, Inc., operator of SpaceLab shared office and coworking spaces in Detroit, MI and St. Petersburg, FL. Since 2021, the company has also provided fiduciary and program administration services for Detroit’s City Walls public art program, furthering its mission to foster creativity and collaboration within urban environments.

Building on her 30-plus years’ experience in architecture and construction, Karen co-founded A/E Collaborative, a design delivery and project management consulting firm. Over the past 12 months, she has written proposals and secured contracts for over $4 million in project services for both companies.

Karen advocates for inclusion and diversity in the built environment professions through a variety of projects and organizations, including Noir Design Parti and the Women's Sustainable Development Initiative (WSDI). She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture from the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan, completed coursework toward a Master of Business Administration, and graduated the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses intensive.
