Getting Started with Nature Journaling: Finding Patterns

Point Reyes National Seashore Association (PRNSA) is a cooperating association of the National Park Service. We work in partnership with Point Reyes National Seashore and the public to preserve, restore and maintain wildlife habitat, trails, and historic sites in our beautiful coastal park. Our year-round environmental education programs help children and adults deepen their understanding of nature and inspire the next generation of park stewards.

Interested in nature journaling, but don’t know where to begin? Get started by learning to document nature's patterns in Bear Valley!

Point Reyes National Seashore

Are you nervous or intimidated to start a nature journal? Are you unsure what you’ll need or how to begin? Join this class and learn simple strategies to help get you started and stay engaged. The theme of “finding patterns in nature” will guide learners through various prompts and exercises, while inspiring a daily journaling practice. Students will learn how to use a box-and-line note pad to document observations and practice fundamental journaling skills. This social and interactive class will be dedicated to discovering resources, field sketching, and journal sharing. Please note, we will not focus on specific artistic styles, media, or techniques. This class is best suited for all science/nature backgrounds and beginner to intermediate artists.

Registration fee includes a “Sit Spot Nature Journaling Kit” which contains archival quality and eco-friendly supplies (field sketching stool, water resistant pencil bag, hardbound mixed media sketchbook, watercolors, pens, pencils, and much more) for you to take home. 

This class will be held primarily outdoors, meeting at the Red Barn Classroom in Bear Valley and utilizing nearby fields and trails. Some time may be spent indoors if regulations allow. Please wear comfortable shoes, dress in layers, and bring a bagged lunch, water, sunscreen, bug repellant, and a hat (binoculars optional).Jasmine Dingler is a disease ecologist, environmental educator, and avid birder. She is passionate about connecting people to nature, and founded Oriole Ornithological, a company focused on providing parents, teachers, and students with the tools, resources, &amp; training to equitably participate in community science.

-We will be meeting at the Red Barn Classroom in Bear Valley
- Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to check in
- Refunds available for all classes 7 days in advance of the start date, after 7 days and before 2 days, participants can credit their class for a future date. All requests before 48 hours in advance will be declined. For COVID cancellation policy, see below.
- Please follow the parking instructions for the facility used that day
- Please provide an email you check regularly for updates and reminders about your class 
- Registration is required online prior to the event in order to maintain class sizes
- Sales end 48 hours before the start date.
- Waitlists are available when the class sells out

COVID-19 Field Institute Guidelines
In accordance with Marin County and CDC guidelines for public health, we will require all participants to respect the following COVID-19 procedures:
•	Perform a health self-check before coming to class using the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/symptoms-testing/symptoms.html" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">CDC Symptoms of Coronavirus</a> as a guide
•	Do not attend class if you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, suspect you have been exposed to the virus, or are suffering from any other flu-like or respiratory illness.
•	Participants exhibiting signs of respiratory illness may be asked to leave class
During class all participants will be required to do the following
•	We recommend that all participants continue to wear masks at this time, however, in accordance with CDC guidelines, exceptions can be made for fully vaccinated individuals if desired. 
•	Fully vaccinated individuals may remove masks for outdoor classes if they continue to maintain a 6’ distance from other participants. 
•	Unvaccinated individuals are required to wear a face covering unless farther than 6’ from other participants in an outdoor class. 
•	Continue to maintain a 6 foot physical distance from other participants not belonging to your household
•	Bring your own food and water
•	Current group sizes are still limited, there will be no physical contact or sharing of food and drink, and no shared physical equipment or materials unless they are sanitized before and after use, and used by only one person for the duration of class
NOTE: Refund policy exceptions will be made for participants cancelling last minute due to COVID-19 infection or symptoms. Please contact us in this case.
