This class offers an in-depth look at boating safety and provides the knowledge needed to obtain a certificate and a Florida Boating Education ID Card. Some insurance companies will also offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete this course.

TOPICS INCLUDE:

Introduction to Boating – Types of power boats, boating vocabulary, sailboats, engine types, and personal watercraft.

Before You Get Underway – Capacity plates, float plans, fueling, trailering, vessel maintenance.

Operating Your Boat Safely and Navigation – Casting off and docking, navigation and passing rules, night navigation and lights, sound signals, aids to navigation, anchoring, locks and bridges, operating a PWC or jet-driven watercraft, and avoiding propeller strikes.

Legal Requirements of Boating - Required Safety Equipment – Federal laws for registration and decals, titles, unlawful operation, alcohol and drug impairment, life jackets, fire extinguishers, sound-producing devices, lights, visual distress signals, PWC operation, waste and trash disposal, and reporting boating accidents, as well as Florida-specific boating regulations.

Boating Emergencies – Hypothermia, boating accidents, man overboard, capsizing, fire emergencies, running aground, emergency radio calls, carbon monoxide dangers, and weather.

Enjoying Water Sports and Boating – Special tips for water sports, including pre-departure checklists, protecting the environment, small boats and paddle-craft, water-skiing, hunting, snorkeling, and fishing.
