Description

Every year, 2% to 10% of pregnancies in the United States are affected by gestational diabetes. This occurs when the body is unable to make and use all the insulin it needs for pregnancy. Insulin is a hormone that assists glucose (sugar) leave the blood and use as energy. In this case, the body is left with high levels of glucose.

Untreated and Poorly Controlled Gestational Diabetes can Cause:

• Delivering a very large baby (9 pounds or more).

• Higher risk for C-Section.

• Premature birth, which can cause breathing and other complications.

• High risk of obesity.

• Higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future.

The Clinical Nutrition Team at Bayfront Health Spring Hill offers a gestational diabetes education program to help moms-to-be learn the risks if the condition is left untreated, self-efficient skills such as home glucose monitoring, blood glucose log, reading food labels, appropriate serving size, and much more.

This class is offered to pregnant women who have been recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes.

Managing gestational diabetes may improve your health and the health of your baby.
