This continuing education event teaches participants the theory and skills of Gestalt Play Therapy. Participants will learn about the Gestalt style of assessment and conceptualization of psychopathology. Participants will learn and practice Gestalt Play Therapy skills including use of expressive arts, creative arts, and crafts.  Participants will learn therapeutic processing skills used in Gestalt Play Therapy to facilitate psychological integration and healing.

Training will be live and in-person only.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this workshop, the learner will be able to:

1. Recite the core theoretical concepts of Gestalt Play Therapy

2. Discuss the use of self-expression as a tool to facilitate psychological integration

3. Demonstrate ability to practice key Gestalt Play Therapy skills and interventions such as expressive art and craft activities

4. Describe how Gestalt Play Therapists activate the therapeutic powers of play to resolve intrapsychic and interpersonal conflict

5. Assess when Gestalt Play therapy may be an effective intervention for treatment

6. Conceptualize Play Therapy cases from a Gestalt Play therapy framework

Participation

A Time for Play Therapy Continuing Education events are professional trainings developed for master's level mental health clinicians and students. Prior Play Therapy knowledge and experience are helpful but not necessary to participate. Play Therapy credit available to mental health professionals and graduate students in a mental health program.

Handouts

Each registration for an A Time for Play Continuing Education includes limited time access to a Google Drive folders with handouts specific to the training. It also includes a folder of suggested readings of articles, book excerpts, and research that are specifically relevant to the Play Therapy training topic. Please make sure you are able to access and download the materials.

Virtual Attendance

Per APT guidelines, virtually attendees must keep your cameras on and be present and focused throughout the entire presentation. This guideline is especially important because there are several interactive activities and breakout discussions that require group participation.

Post-Test and Evaluation

Participants will be given a post-test and an anonymous evaluation to complete at the end of each training. Participants must attest to completing the evaluation and must meet a minimum score of 80% to receive Continuing Education credit.

Cancellation Policy

A Time for Play reserves the right to cancel any of these training in the event of unforeseen circumstances. If such a cancellation occurs, A Time for Play will attempt to notify registrants and refund all registration fees.

This Continuing Education event is acceptable for the purposes of license renewal for Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists in the state of Texas by fully complying with Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council guidelines and Texas Administrative Code RULE §781.501, RULE §681.142, & RULE §801.261

The Association for Play Therapy sets the credentialing standards for Play Therapists and approves applications for the Registered Play Therapist Credential. Organized by

Steven L. Parks is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Board Approved Supervisor and serves the Graduate College of Social Work as a full-time lecturing faculty professor. Steven also maintains a small private practice in Sugar Land, Texas and specializes in working with children, adolescents, and adults who have experienced trauma or present with depression, anxiety, or behavioral acting out. He is a Registered Play Therapist & Supervisor and holds certifications in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy. Steven is an alumni of the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work and holds a BA of Psychology from Texas Tech University and an MBA and MSW degree from the University of Houston.
