About this event

  • 1 hour 30 minutes

As a young man, German artist Gerhard Richter had to escape the Communist German Democratic Republic in order to connect with the country's leading artistic talents in Düsseldorf and Cologne. How did the incredible burden of Germany’s recent history become a strong focus in his work, and how did it share a dialogue with other contemporary artists of his day? It's time to delve into Gerhard Richter's very personal, and truly sincere, abstract art like never before.

Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the artistic catalog of German artist Gerhard Richter, one of the leading contemporary artists of our age who inspired others to contemplate how we make sense of history, how we remember, and how we place value in our world.

Led by museum educator and art historian Sylvia Laudien-Meo, our virtual experience surrounding the abstract paintings, films, and even stained glass works of Richter will include:

  • A brief overview of Gerhard Richter’s early years, from his upbringing in East Germany to why he escaped to the West
  • An in depth discussion of the artist’s work, placing it in context with his contemporaries, such as Andy Warhol
  • A close look at Richter’s technique of painting from photographs, but blurring the images
  • A discussion of the artist’s new approaches to portraiture
  • New abstract techniques developed by Richter, including using especially made squeegees
  • Complex Abstract compositions based on color charts
  • A peek at his more recent works surrounding pixelation and photography

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Sylvia — any and all questions about Gerhard Richter are welcomed and encouraged!
