Event description

Description

In August 1937, George Watt left his bride in New York City to join the Lincoln Battalion fighting against fascism in Spain. Ruth Rosenthal Watt worked for the WPA, organized public support and peace demonstrations, and sent care packages to the fellows in Spain. Excerpts from their letters, with songs of the Spanish Civil War and other political causes in the U.S., tell their story against the backdrop of war.

80 years later, from Thursday, Aug. 17th, to Sunday, Aug. 27 th, 2017, Silver Meteor Gallery is proud to present:

"George & Ruth"

Songs and Letters of the Spanish Civil War

Written by Dan & Molly Lynn Watt

Directed by Jo Averill-Snell | Music Direction by Justin Medlen

Featuring: Jeff Lukas & Katherine Stenzel

It is based on excerpts of letters Dan’s parents exchanged between his father, George Watt, a volunteer in the Spanish Civil War and his bride of a year, Ruth Watt, a student activist in New York City. The tale also unfolds through songs sung in English, German, French, Spanish, and Yiddish. Howard Zinn and Pete Seeger proclaimed this play “an important contribution keeping the spirit of democracy and conscience alive”.
