About this event

Join us for this unique 4-part ceramic sculpture class with island artist Kat Rose. Participants will build forms using clay, tar paper, and terra sigilatta. These forms will be wrapped in porcelain slip-covered paper and raku fired. The end result is beautiful and geometric.

Week 1: Sculpting with Tar Paper -  Build forms using tar paper as an exoskeleton. Tar paper allows us to build complex forms while the clay is still wet.

Week 2: Refine Your Forms -  We’ll apply Terra Sigilatta - a solution of only fine clay particles. It makes a buttery surface on the form -a perfect canvas for the fumes to impart color.

Week 3: Creating the Egg Saggers - We wrap our forms with combustible materials, then wrap porcelain slip covered strips of paper to create a paper mache egg around the form.

Week 4: The Grand Finale: Atmospheric Firing and the Revelation of Color -The egg saggers undergo atmospheric firing in a raku kiln. When they are removed, the eggs are cracked open to reveal vibrant, unpredictable hues made by fumes from the combustibles.

This class is held in the clay studio in the main art building on the AAC campus. Directions and parking information will be included in your confirmation email. Class takes place on four Sundays: 4/7, 4/14, 4/21, and 4/28 from 1-4pm.

Registration: Please register early if you are able, as it helps us to assure that classes meet their minimums in order to run! If you register more than three weeks before this class begins, a 20% early bird discount will automatically be applied to your ticket at checkout.

A Note on Ticket Pricing: We are experimenting with offering sliding scale tickets in order to keep our classes accessible to as many community members as possible. There are three price tiers. Sustaining tickets help us continue to invest in programming. Full price tickets cover the costs associated with running classes. Accessibility tickets are priced below what it costs for us to run a class. If the cost of a full price ticket is a hardship, we encourage you to purchase a sliding scale ticket. If you can pay the full price or sustaining price, please choose that option so we can keep providing arts programming to the community.

Tuition Assistance: Tuition assistance is available for Alchemy classes and workshops if finances are a barrier. Apply for tuition assistance here.

This class is a fundraiser for Alchemy - Kat is generously donating her time to Alchemy in order for this to be possible. Thank you, Kat!
