Geocaching 101 Workshop

Friends of Government Canyon is made up of a growing group of active volunteers who take pride in the work we do — from grooming trails to facilitating education programs to advocating the protection of the Aquifer and numerous resources found within the boundaries of the Natural Area. We are hikers, naturalists, artists, mountain bikers, runners, researchers, clean water advocates and in general, lovers of the outdoors with one common mission; protecting and preserving the Natural Area.

There’s a treasure hunt going on that combines technology with nature! Come learn how to geocache with an experienced geocacher and get in on the fun! This is a classroom-style program that also includes going out and locating caches hidden within the Natural Area. Learn how easy it is to get started using your own smart phone or GPS unit. GPS units will be available for those who don’t yet have one.Who is Invited: Open to ages 8 and above; participants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian; no pets please.Registration, Fees, Day Pass &amp; Cancellation: Registration is required for this hike. Group size is limited. Sorry, no group registrations. Registration opens on Saturday, two weeks prior to the event, and closes at noon, the Thursday before the event. Though the hike is free, <a href="https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/government-canyon/fees-facilities/entrance-fees" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">entrance fees</a> to the Natural Area apply. To save time at the Fee Booth and ensure entrance on crowded days, please pre-purchase and PRINT OUT a <a href="https://texasstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/government-canyon-state-natural-area/r/deDetails.do?contractCode=TX&amp;parkId=1200058" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Day Pass</a>. SPECIAL NOTE: Reserving a Day Pass is NOT the same as making a program reservation.This event is subject to cancellation. Check trail conditions by going to the <a href="https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/government-canyon" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">GCSNA twitter feed</a> or the Government Canyon State Natural Area Facebook page. When &amp; Where to Meet: Meet at the Visitors Center Exhibit Gallery. The Natural Area can be very busy! The Natural Area front gates open at 7:00AM; plan to be at the Visitor Center and ready to go no later than 1:00PM. What to Wear &amp; Bring: BYO smart phone or GPS unit or when you register, let us know if you need to borrow a GPS unit. Dress for being outdoors; sunscreen and hat recommended. Wear sturdy footwear appropriate for rough trails; bring one (1) liter of water PER PERSON and a snack if you like.
