Implementing change requires a constant infusion of new ideas and differing perspectives. It’s through these collaborations that lasting change can benefit local and global communities. In this spirit, Impact Hub DC’s new Unlikely Allies series will gather leaders from different sectors to discuss issues in need of innovation. Each event will also feature musical and spoken word performances.
Before and after the discussion, join us for light refreshments (including the changemaker cocktail) and networking. Refreshments are included in the price of the ticket.  This event is free for Impact Hub members. An expert in bringing social innovation, youth development, and entrepreneurship along with urban farming techniques to underrepresented communities, Christopher honed his organizing and entrepreneurial skills at Howard University while studying political science and business. His call to social organizing led him to leave Howard to form Dreaming Out Loud, Inc. (DOL), which fully embraces urban agriculture and social enterprise as mechanisms for changing communities. DOL founded and manages Aya Community Markets, a network of farmers markets and mobile farm stands that serve as the organization’s platform for advocacy, improving community health, impacting youth and furthering community economic development.  Chris was selected as a 2015 Ashoka-American Express Emerging Innovator, a finalist for Ashoka Changemakers’ Nutrients for All competition, and one of 50 Under 50: Innovative Leaders Transforming Metro DC’s Food System. He is a frequent speaker on social innovation, urban agriculture and regional food systems, and the food justice movement.

Drawing on his experiences in the restaurant business, Mike has spent significant time expanding the Kitchen’s revenue-generating social enterprise initiatives. Under his leadership, DC Central Kitchen’s Fresh Start Catering has expanded from traditional catering opportunities to include contracts to provide locally-sourced, scratched-cooked meals to schools across Washington, DC. DC Central Kitchen’s Nutrition Lab facility, funded and launched under Mike’s leadership, has allowed DCCK to take on more contracts, rapidly increase investments in purchasing from local farms, and improve production efficiency. Due to its many social service programs, the Kitchen now employs over 130 people, approximately 40 percent who are graduates of the Kitchen’s nationally recognized Culinary Job Training Program. Social enterprise now accounts for nearly 65 percent of DCCK’s total operating budget.

Mary Fitch is Executive Director of the Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Washington Architectural Foundation.   In that capacity, she has founded and developed the award-winning ArchitectureDC Magazine, Architecture Week, Design DC Conference and built the District Architecture Center.   Mary was the deputy director of Long-Range Planning at the National Capital Planning Commission working most particularly on the Monumental Core Plan.   She holds a BA in History from UC Berkley and a Masters in Urban Planning from George Washington University.  She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners and an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects.

Tamika, at 11, was discovered when a classmate heard her singing and stated she could no longer keep her voice hidden, from then on, Ms. Jones began singing everywhere. Tamika soon caught the attention of Grammy-nominated producer Chucky Thompson. The DC native worked with home bred Tamika for several years mentoring her on songwriting, recording and the music business. As Tamika began searching for her own sound and place in the industry, she found that she was most at home with Jazz & Gospel but her love affair with hip hop is what she found connected her to her peers. Her new project shares her life, love, and passions in the only way she sees fit, through heart-wrenching lyrics delivered in the most enchanting of melodic tones.

For the last four years, Scott has been working with the Washington D.C. Office of Planning and the Ward 8 nonprofit Building Bridges Across the River at THEARC to transform an old freeway bridge into a park above the Anacostia River. The old 11th Street Bridges that connect Capitol Hill with communities east of the river have reached the end of their lifespan, Scott is working with the community to use the base of one of the bridges to create a one of a kind civic space supporting active recreation, environmental education, and the arts.
Scott is a resident of Barrack’s Row and has lived in Washington D.C. for the last 10 years. He has worked in the education field for twenty years and began his career teaching at Kidspace, a children’s museum in Pasadena, California and later as the Associate Director of the Institute for the Study of the American West at the Autry National Center in Los Angeles, CA. While at the Autry, he supervised a staff that planned and implemented programs including theater, film, music, festivals, family programs, lecture series, and academic symposia. Most recently, he was the Vice President for Education at the National Building Museum in Washington D.C.

Mziwandile is the Deputy Director of Recreation Services for DC’s Department of Recreation and Parks.  Mziwandile formerly served as the Director of Student Discipline and School Climate for DCPS and Dean of students at Ballou High School.  He is a alumni of Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business.

Anas “Andy” Shallal is an artist and social entrepreneur. He is the founder of Busboys and Poets, Share Space DC & Mulebone Restaurant. Shallal’s concepts create an environment where racial and cultural connections are consciously uplifted. Spaces to feed the mind, body, and soul and where art, culture and politics take center stage and collide. With 6 locations in the Washington Metropolitan Area, Busboys and Poets has become home for progressives, artists and intellectuals including such notables as Howard Zinn, Cornel West, Alice Walker and Nikki Giovanni to name a few.

Gabriel “Asheru” Benn, M.Ed. is an educator, youth activist, and international Hip Hop artist based in Washington, DC. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia (B.A., Anthropology), and National Louis-University (M.Ed., Curriculum & Instruction). He has served as a teacher/administrator in DC Public, Private, and Charter Schools for 17 years, and for the past 9 years as Founding Director of Guerilla Arts Ink, LLC, an arts & educational consulting organization specializing in out of school time (OST) cultural arts programming, innovative curriculum design, and youth development. In 2006, Benn co-founded Educational Lyrics, an educational publishing company with the mission/vision of making equitable, culturally responsive instructional materials for the 21st Century classroom. His cornerstone program is H.E.L.P., the Hip Hop Educational Literacy Program, a supplemental series of workbooks designed to HELP students of all reading levels through the innovative usage of timeless, socially relevant Hip Hop lyrics for critical analysis, multicultural relevance, and effective literacy instruction. H.E.L.P materials are currently being used in schools, and afterschool and alternative programs all over the country, and has been endorsed by a wide range of educators and youth advocates, including Sen. Barack Obama (in 2008), Dr. Cornel West, Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, and many others.
He is widely known for his musical contributions to the hit TV show “The Boondocks” for which he wrote and performed several songs, including the show’s theme song. Benn also co-wrote “The Return of the King” episode, for which he won the prestigious Peabody Award in 2006. Upon invitation, Gabriel “Asheru” Benn has had the distinguished honor of lecturing and presenting his unique professional development model at dozens of schools, universities, international conferences and teacher institutes across the country, including the NEA, IRA & NCTE, as well as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Stanford University, American University, Columbia University, Tufts University and the Congressional Black Caucus. He was recently appointed by the U.S. State Department as a U.S. Global Cultural Hip Hop Ambassador, and traveled to Bangladesh in November 2014 as part of his first diplomatic assignment. In 2016 Benn was selected to represent Washington, DC at the annual SXSW Festival in Austin, TX.
