GEM MIMICS

GEM MIMICS

Overview

Join gemologist Nicky Elliot as he delves into the deceptive universe of gemstone mimics and shares the secrets of telling them apart.

Ruby, Garnet, or Spinel? Diamond or Zircon? Emerald or Tsavorite?

If you were given these sets of gemstones, could you tell the difference between them?

Then ask yourself, are you sure?

Join gemologist Nicky Elliot as he delves into the fascinating, often deceptive universe of gemstone mimics–the sparkling doppelgangers that could have you seeing double–or even triple–if you don’t know the clues to telling them apart.

Using actual samples and tools of the trade, Nicky will take you on a valuable journey through the compelling challenges of differentiating natural gemstones from imitations and synthetic counterparts.

In the process, you’ll not only learn how to scope out some of the fraudulent practices and scams that unfortunately go with the territory, but, if there’s a particular piece of jewelry in your collection that has always had you guessing, you’re invited to bring it along and Nicky will show you how to tell if those precious family heirlooms have any value beyond the sentimental.

By the end of this workshop, you’ll discover how all that glitters is not sapphire.

Nicky Elliot is an FCGmA certified gemologist and R-PJA certified jewelry appraiser who also designs and creates jewelry through his own Gemesis Creations,. His original pieces are on display in various venues including Ed’s Mercantile.
