LOVECITYLOVE presents GAME RECOGNIZE GAME | Laura Cassidy and Erin Sullivan |
in collaboration with Jessa Carter and Ria Leigh German folklore says dopplegangers are the harbingers of adversity or even death. A face-to-face encounter with one’s look-alike or alter ego can signal mortality, or just really bad luck. Plato presented the idea of soulmates; individuals who make up matched sets created when Zeus cleaved humans in half to punish their pride. Whenever two long-lost halves cross paths again, recognition is swift; the pair “fits” together immediately and perfectly as if they were never apart. Game Recognize Game takes as it’s starting point the middle ground between these two ideas. Erin Sullivan and Laura Cassidy met during Seattle’s early ‘00s garage rock scene. By 2004, they were married. Like many couples, best friends and partners, they experience their union as an uncanny, magnetic and occasionally maddening reunion that yields constant and sporadic inspiration, motivation, support, and great challenge. “Game Recognize Game” is about working together and working independently. Sullivan is a painter and musician known to many as the singer and guitar player of the A Frames; Cassidy is a longtime Seattle journalist (most recently the style editor of Seattle Met; currently a fashion editor at Nordstrom) and short fiction writer/experimental storyteller. They don't necessarily create together or in tandem per se, but in Game Recognize Game their recent work—his abstract paintings and photo manipulations and her ongoing text explorations—represents fate’s pairing process. In the gallery setting, these pieces will be presented not as matched sets nor as lost parts but as examples of the process. Game Recognize Game is not a romance, it’s a documentary. 
The show also includes a four-part story cycle video produced with friends Jessa Carter and Ria Leigh as a sort of embrace of the fact that mates and matches and twins and partners are certainly not always binary or amorous. The video, titled Rose Petals Litter the Shore, includes songs recorded by various combinations of Sullivan, Cassidy, Carter and Leigh together in a project called Litter Shore, as well as Cassidy’s performed (spoken) stories. 
In addition, Game Recognize Game will serve as the release of Backyard Birds Barking at Trees, a small volume of Cassidy’s short and very short fiction paired with montaged film prints culled from the couple’s personal collection as well as family archives. Finally, visitors to LOVECITYLOVE will find upon entering the gallery that the front area has become a gift shop. Tee-shirts made by Sullivan and Cassidy with paint-splattered bi-products of his paintings will be on offer as well as home and lifestyle items commissioned from life partners and free spirits from Seattle and beyond.
