Utility Work's MakerSpace is proud to present the Fundamentals of Raw Clothing Constructions and Life Skills Workshop Series, led by Netfah Amina- Afia. This six-part course will cover a holistic range of perspectives on our relationship with clothing. From studying the materiality and learning hands-on how to manipulate different materials and fabrics to reflecting on our ecological responsibility and learning actionable steps to become better shepherds of the planet to discussing basic concepts of holistic dress, this course challenges its students to cultivate a slow fashion mindset in a fast fashion world. Each week, students will leave the class with a finished piece.

Students are STRONGLY encouraged to sign up for the entire series. If they are unable to, students may sign up for only one of the week’s topics by selecting that week’s tickets.

‘Basic Fix - It Clinic Stitches Workshop’ Did you know the strongest stitch is sewn by hand not a machine? Learn 6 basic hand stitches and repair techniques that can save your beloved clothing and accessories from the recycle bin and $$$ in repairs.

'Design Your Own Unique Tee-Bag’ Have a favorite t-shirt that you’ve outgrown or has simply outgrown you? Save your fav and play your part as one of Mother Earth’s Stewards by turning your textile trash into a DIY treasure.

‘Dress Right for Your Body Type Workshop’ Looking for appealing ways to adorn your specific body frame? Our body type workshop puts the measuring tape and body chart in the palm of your hands.

' Fiber Identification For Future Generations' registrants will learn the basic properties of fabrics to distinguish between natural and synthetic materials in this truly tactile workshop

‘Design Your Own Unique Fiber Wall Art'.Play your part in creating sustainable art by repurposing our provided selection of African prints, assorted trims and design accents to create unique works of fiber art to add to wall or tabletop décor.

Basic materials will be provided though donations are welcome. Participants must be 11+

Duration: 6 sessions (Tues 4/22-Tue 5/27 @6pm)

Standard Rates: $250 full series / $50 per session.

About the Instructor: A global fashion designer, seamstress, and wholistic adornment coach, Netfah Amina~Afia holds a degree in Family & Consumer Science from Rowan University and her C.H.H.C certification from the International Board of African Thinkers, Traditional Priests, Healers and Religion Inc. A long-time advocate on behalf of the slow-fashion movement and a consummate student despite over 30 years in the fashion/textile industry, Netfah infuses traditional and new-age insights into her sought after experiential classes. Her series of adornment and FRCC workshops are designed to offer transformational tools and fundamental life skills that will equip individuals for a lifetime.
