The field of psychedelic medicine presents a uniquely fertile space for discussions of decolonization. However, the concept of decolonization is often presented as a philosophical shift lacking clear intermediate steps; it is a vague destination without a roadmap. As a participant in psychedelic academia, Tegan M. Carr observed that such framing of decolonization leaves learners dissonant and discouraged, with a sense of exclusivity, even helplessness, in their perceived ability to integrate decolonization. Through qualitative research, Tegan developed Functional Decolonization: a methodology for the practice of decolonization that employs cognitive behavioral technique and theories of relativity to elevate agency, access, and ownership in decolonization. Carr is a mixed-race Afro-Indigenous Researcher, Artist-Activist, Writer, and Medical Student with a multidisciplinary background in anthropology, linguistics, dance, art-assisted restorative justice and community building, behavioral and developmental health, and clinical research coordination. She has been widely recognized for her leadership and innovation in medical education reform for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI): the American Academy of Medical Colleges (AAMC) honored her with the Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Award and the Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians (MAFP) titled her Medical Student Leader of the Year 2021.Tegan is trained in Psychedelic Assisted Therapies and Research through the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS); she is a REACH Program Scholar of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) and Yale School of Medicine, trained to recognize and address the inequities in addiction and addiction healthcare. As a UMN Duluth medical student, Tegan’s medical training comes with special attention to serving Native American populations and in the unique and underappreciated characteristics of rural medicine.Tegan is a seasoned psychiatry research professional with broad expertise in human subjects research. Tegan is a junior investigator, sponsored by the Nielson Lab, and she researches, presents, consults, and advocates in the areas of psychedelic therapeutics, sociocultural and cross-cultural medicine, DEI, trauma and healing, and academic decolonization.
