Workshop Description NERC will be conducting a strategic planning workshop in the Atlanta office on Thursday, January 17, 2019 to develop action items addressing recommendations in the recent NERC Reliability Assessment on Potential Bulk Power System Impacts Due to Severe Disruption on the Natural Gas System Assessments. The workshop will cover an overview of activities from 2017 and 2018, as well as discussions on the direction for addressing fuel assurance planning concerns, and the creation of a new working group to examine opportunities and collaboration between the electric and gas industries. In the afternoon breakout sessions, groups will brainstorm on developing objectives, work scopes, and deliverables.

Background

The NERC Planning Committee (PC) is implementing a plan to address fuel assurance risk in Bulk-Power System planning. Recently the NERC Board accepted the PC’s proposals, which include:

  • The PC will oversee the development of a new Reliability Guide that focuses on including fuel assurance and fuel disruption risk into BPS planning studies. The PC will form a task force to convene subject matter experts and establish the goals and deliverables for the creation of a new guide.
  • Based on some observations made from the July 10, 2018 Workshop, fuel assurance continues to grow and impact the Reliable Operation of the Bulk Electric System which could lead to wide-spread implications. Therefore, the PC, subject to the feedback from the work conducted in the first course list above, may, if appropriate, oversee the creation of a Standard Authorization Request (SAR).
  • The PC will form a new working group to study and assist with the development of tools and other resources on natural gas interoperability concerns.

The NERC PC will be overseeing the workshop to develop action plans on these subjects. A formal agenda will be forthcoming within the next several weeks. In the meantime the NERC PC wanted to provide advance notice for this workshop. The workshop will accommodate 35 people and will be filled on a first come first serve basis.
