Learn from an expert!Ben Heusinkvelt will be leading the workshop. He is the Grounds and Orchard Manager at Arbor Day Farm where he is also responsible for the care and operations of Arbor Day Farm’s 20-acre apple orchard and of the fresh cider production.The class will cover tree care and pruning techniques of various fruit trees including apples, pears, stone fruits (cherries, apricots, plums etc.) As well as the citrus trees found in the greenhouse! We’ll talk about the basic do’s and don’ts of winter pruning and what to look for to help your tree and its fruit thrive in the upcoming growing season and beyond. We will also touch on helpful tips on beginning your own backyard orchard and discuss varieties, tree care and planting advice, pest management etc. Also included will be grafting techniques and the how, why and history of grafting as it is an important piece of fruit trees.The day will begin with the classroom presention at Lied Randolph Public Library. A meal will be provided. We will continue the experience with hands-on opportunities at Pfanny's Farm (2.5 miles north of the 81-20 jct).Please dress for the weather. Feel free to bring your own pruners/lopper.
