The Holyoke Preservation Trust is pleased to sponsor Bob Comeau’s South Amherst Cemetery and Commons tour. Join us as we learn about this very historical area of South Amherst. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, South Amherst Common Historic District, also known as Fiddlers Green, developed as a rural residential village hub in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The South Amherst Cemetery has a rich history dating back to the early 18th century. It was established in 1737, making it one of the oldest cemeteries in the area. It was originally known as the "First Burial Ground" or the "Old Cemetery." Many of the early settlers of Amherst and their descendants are buried in this cemetery. The graves include those of veterans from various wars, including the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. This cemetery is a reflection of Amherst's history, with gravestones and monuments that provide insights into the town's early days, cultural diversity, and social structures.

Meet and park at the commons in South Amherst and be prepared to walk approximately 1 mile.

No need to print ticket.
