AM Session:

Presenters: Jon Erickson

This session will explain and help you understand the changes between the previous and new residential energy code in Rhode Island, the 2024 IECC.

See how the changes will impact construction details, material selection, and building practices. We will address available compliance pathways and required mechanical ventilation.

  • Learn what options are available to you to meet the energy code.
  • Review the new requirements for mechanical ventilation and what system alternatives qualify.
  • Examine best practice strategies for building assemblies, from foundations through roofs.
  • Discover how to build an affordable net zero home through through the lens of Cardinal Lane.

We’ll review proven methods that enable builders and designers to build cost-effective, healthy, high-performance homes.

We will introduce funding opportunities and program incentives that are available to offset costs whether you’re just meeting the code or reaching beyond the code with programs like Zero Energy Homes and Zero Energy Ready Homes - simple upgrades to any project.

PM Session:

Presenters: Dan Warner from Habitat for Humanity and Steve DeMetrick from DeMetrick Housewrights

Learn about high performance building from South County Habitat for Humanity. This local chapter recently put the finishing touches on a seven-lot subdivision, Cardinal Lane, in Hopkinton, RI and certified all seven houses to the Department of Energy’s rigorous Zero Energy Ready Home standard. With the addition of solar panels, these affordable homes will be truly net zero.

Habitat’s project manager Dan Warner will give insight into this affiliate’s commitment to building better buildings and will share their work analyzing the material cost implications of building these above code homes. This is a game changer of a project on the RI construction scene that we all hope will help inspire everyone in the building industry to embrace high performance building as an achievable standard.

The presenters will answer the following questions:

  • Why did they choose to pursue this path?
  • How did they achieve outcomes?
  • What were the learning curves?
  • Cost analysis - How much did this cost, did it cost more and what is the rate of return?

Finally, we will detail funding opportunities and program incentives that are available to offset costs.
