Frequently asked questions

Do I need a partner?

Nope! All classes will rotate through partners, so you get a chance to dance with everyone. Social dances are super friendly - anyone can ask anyone to dance.

What if I only want to dance with the partner I brought?

Most classes will allow you to step out of the rotation if you want. But if you’re okay stepping out of your comfort zone, the best way to learn is to dance with a variety of people! That way you don’t accidentally adapt to only one person.

What shoes do I need?

For your first few times, no need to buy new shoes! Something with a hard sole (leather or hard plastic/rubber) is best. You want something that slides on a dance floor and won’t leave marks. Make sure it’s comfortable! You’ll be dancing in them for a while. Most people don’t wear heels, but if you

What should I wear?

Something you can move in! No need to be formal. It’s a good idea to bring a change of shirt (you might get sweaty). Please practice good hygiene - you’ll be getting close to strangers! Wear deodorant, brush your teeth, and please minimize perfumes and other heavy scents.

What else should I bring with me to a lesson or social dance?

In addition to a change of shirt, you’ll want a water bottle and maybe a small towel depending on how much you tend to sweat.

How do I ask someone to dance?

It’s easy! Come up to them, ask “would you like to dance?”, and if they say yes, offer your hand and find a slot on the dance floor together. If they say no, move on and ask someone else - they might be tired, injured, or just not enjoying the song. Don’t take it personally! Most people turn down at

What if someone asks me to dance and I don’t want to?

That’s okay! You have the right to decline a dance for any reason. You can say “no, thank you” or “not right now, but ask me again later!”.

Can I bring kids?

Yes, West Coast Swing is for all ages so children are welcome if they are old enough to follow new dance instructions.

How is parking at Alki Masonic Hall?

Seattle Swing Dance Club events held at the masonic center has an attached private lot available for dancer parking. If lot is full, street parking is available nearby.
