“Framing Shadows/Framing Lives: A Rosemary Magee Creativity Conversation” with Mary Schmidt Campbell and Kimberly Wallace Sanders
During this Creativity Conversation, moderated by WABE’s award-winning journalist Rose Scott, Mary Schmidt Campbell, PhD, president of Spelman College, the country’s leading liberal arts college for black women, and Kimberly Wallace-Sanders, PhD, associate professor of American Studies and African American Studies in Emory’s department of African American Studies, will talk about their shared interests in African American photography and African American cultural studies. Campbell began her career in the arts as a museum director and curator in New York City at the Studio Museum in Harlem and is the author of a recent biography of the black artist, Romare Bearden. Wallace-Sanders, who joined Emory’s faculty in 1999, is the author of "Mammy: A Century of Race, Gender and Southern Memory" (University of Michigan Press, 2007). She is now completing her second book about African American domestic workers, having researched this topic since her doctoral studies at Boston University.
This program was inspired by the exhibition “Framing Shadows: Portraits of African American Nannies from the Robert Langmuir African American Photograph Collection,” curated by Kimberly Wallace-Sanders. The show, on display in Emory’s Woodruff Library through December 31, offers insight into the experiences of the largely anonymous 19th and early 20th century African Americans who served as child care providers for white families. Their portraits are captured in compelling photographs from the Langmuir collection housed in the Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library at Emory.
