Foundations: Energy (in)Equity Training

Foundations, presented by Energy (in)Equity, is a professional training that examines how the energy industry perpetuates systemic and racial injustice and what each participant can do to address injustices through individual and collective policy work.

The energy system in the United States is flawed.

Through exclusionary policymaking processes embedded within this system, those with power and privilege benefit the most, while those in low income and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) and other marginalized communities are disproportionately burdened by its harms.

Drawing from Common Spark’s own experiences, Energy (in)Equity offers practical ways of how we can begin to do our collective work differently. By applying a racial justice and equity lens to case studies, participants will begin to better see the sources and impacts of inequities in the energy system. Energy (in)Equity participants will gain resources and encouragement to take intentional steps towards a more equitable energy future.

The Energy (in)Equity training can serve as a starting point or a reminder to how we as individuals can learn and innovate together for a just, clean, and healthy future for all communities.

***This training is a 2-day public training, lasting 3.5 hours per day! ***

Day 1: Wednesday, June 5 @ 9:30am - 1:00pm Pacific Time (PT)

Day 2: Friday, June 7 @ 9:30am - 1:00pm Pacific Time (PT)

As certain sections of the content may be emotionally- and mentally-engaging, we ask all participants to join us with their full presence to the extent possible. Breaks will be allocated appropriately. Attendance is mandatory on both days; be sure you can attend a training session in full prior to registering.

Why do you need my shipping address?

We want to send you a care package for the training days! What does this mean? It will include some handy and useful tools, reading materials, and instructions delivered right to your door. Be sure to give us a shipping address you use! The shipping address you submit via the registration form will be the shipping address we ship the packages to. If your physical location is different from your work office address, please submit your physical location's shipping address to ensure a timely delivery.

Unfortunately, at this time, we are only able to ship within the continental United States. If you would like to attend but your address is outside of the continental U.S, please feel free to still register and we will contact you directly and make other arrangements in lieu of the care package.

What is the training about? What will participants get out of it?

The training is split between two days. Day 1 will focus on identifying and understanding the sources and impacts of inequities within the energy sector and existing systems. Day 2 will build knowledge, tools, resources, and opportunities to begin working differently and committing individual action to create equitable processes and outcomes.

In this training, participants will:

• Practice using a racial justice lens to identify inequities and injustices in the energy industry
• Examine real life examples of energy and environmental policymakers and advocates putting the Jemez Principles into action and how those actions support more equitable outcomes
• Identify personal next steps and explore anticipated barriers and challenges to integrating equitable practices in your work.

The training will be held virtually via Zoom. We highly recommend joining the training via computer to encourage full participation.

Are there prerequisites?

Knowledge and competence of racial justice, racial equity, power dynamics, and inclusion is a prerequisite for this training. Common Spark Consulting highly recommends at least the first and second of training offered by Race Forward as a baseline for this understanding.

Who is it for?

This training is open to anyone who may be interested, but is particularly geared towards energy advocates and practitioners from any sector (e.g., nonprofit, utilities, and local and state government and agencies).

Are refunds or cancellations allowed?

This training is highly specialized for our participants, who also receive a care package in the mail. Refunds/cancellations will be granted under certain circumstances. If you need to request a cancellation, please reach out as soon as possible to connect@common-spark.com.

In the event this training is cancelled or postponed by Common Spark Consulting, registrants will receive an option for a refund to the original payment method or a credit to a future training. More details will be offered at that time.
