About this event

It is rare to find a fitness modality that helps cross-train athletes, correct posture for those with desk jobs, teach stress-coping strategies, strengthen pelvic floor (no more leaking!), and offer mental stimulation to support dementia and Alzheimers prevention: Pilates has research to back up all of those. My mat Pilates classes are meant to teach vital foundational theory which isn’t normally taught in large-studio classes, as well as the foundational methodology of the originator himself, Joseph Pilates. We explore breathing methods (for stress and function) and posture, and learn movements to help us alleviate chronic neck/shoulder/lower-back pain, all while getting a functional-movement workout. Pilates isn’t yoga, and it’s not about looking like a model; Pilates helps you connect with your body and relearn how to move in ways that are safer for your body to enable you to do more of what you love (like running, tennis, PICKLEBALL, gardening, keeping up with your kids, etc.)., for longer. It’s about balancing your muscles to prevent repetitive-use (or disuse!) injuries.

Come give this class a try - what you learn may just surprise you! If you’re hooked, Jenks Community Education will be hosting my adult mat class starting January 28th, or you can come to my home studio to have a private session with equipment (full studio set-up). You can see my sunny classical/contemporary-fusion studio and find me on Instagram @BarkerPilates, which links to my website and booking system for virtual and in-person training. ☀️

As part of sharing our sunshine, a percentage of every ticket goes towards supporting our host facility, The Bridges Foundation, which teaches employable skills to those with special-needs. Their storefront opens at 10, so Pilates students are welcome to stay after class and shop. Bridge's students make the popcorn and the dog treats, so they are another excellent way to support the good they are doing for our community!

This is the back area of The Bridges Mercantile - we will move the tables/stools out of the way to space our mats out and get rolling! Great location and layout!

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to bring with me?

If you have a mat, bring yours; if not, one is provided. Bring a large bath towel (for prop, not sweat) and a water bottle - who actually drinks enough throughout the day? If you have a yoga block or a core ball, you are welcome to bring to get more out of your practice, but not required.

How hard is this workout?

As hard as you want to make it, but totally doable for beginners; there is always a way to make a move more or less challenging. I want to make sure you understand the movement concepts as they will apply to other life-skills.

If I like it, what else is available?

I will be teaching an evening group mat course for Jenks Community Education beginning late January 2024. I offer privates with full Pilates studio equipment out of my home, and you can add on corrective exercise for what ails you. I will also be making some weekend pop-ups as well.

Can I bring a friend?

Please do! Workouts are always more fun with your bestie! Please send this link to your bestie and have him/her complete it as well so we can have a proper head count for space and supplies reasons.

Can I bring my kids?

Several things are functional-movements that any BODY can do, and it's great to learn them as young as we can. Youth reap long-term benefits when they are at least 9, but if you don't mind taking care of your kiddo so I can focus on class, I'm willing if you're willing. Students 10+ must also pay.
