BMWCx at the UNT Health Science Center in Fort Worth, TX

Initially, Black Men in White Coats started to address the lack of representation of black male physicians but has since expanded to doctors across all healthcare fields. UNTHSC is an ideal host institution to begin pipeline programming in the diverse city of Fort Worth with doctoral programs in medicine, pharmacy, public health, and biomedical sciences.

Black Men in White Coats Overview

Established in 2013, the Black Men in White Coats campaign aims to increase the number of black men pursuing careers in the medical industry. Dr. Dale Okorodudu founded this initiative in response to an AAMC report highlighting the decreasing number of black male applicants to medical school.

The Mission

Black Men in White Coats seeks to increase the number of Black men in medicine through exposure, inspiration, and mentoring. To accomplish this, the Black Men in White Coats organization partners with various medical schools across the country to produce outstanding short documentary videos that bring awareness to this issue that affects the black male population and the nation.

Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit (BMWCx)

The Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit (BMWCx) is one initiative that brings students, parents, educators, clinicians, and community leaders together to uplift our communities. The summits aim to inspire our youth to consider careers in healthcare while laying the foundation for success via mentorship and networking.

The BMWCx is growing to be a highly regarded event, and the summits are limited to one per city per year, with the requesting host institution/organization seeking approval from the Black Men in White Coats organization before obtaining a license.

Target Audience:

The target groups are K-12 students and parents, undergraduate students and pre-health advisors. The event is open to anyone regardless of racial or gender identity, but there should be an intentional effort to represent Black boys and men adequately.
