Forest Immersion School - A Walk in Inwood Forest #2

Location: Inwood Hill Park. We will meet at the Isham Street entrance to the park, next to the tennis courts and bathrooms. We'll start walking by 11:15, try to be on time! Aiming for a 2 hour walk, but not going to be strict about it. Here's a pin for the location: maps.app.goo.gl/yyaA7mBV7FiV38g66

What it will be: Isabel Amarante and Sebastian Bouknight will guide you on a walk through Inwood Forest, a gathering place known to the Lenape as Shorakkapock. This forest is one of the most vibrant and storied in the land we now call New York City, and home to some of the oldest surviving communities of trees in the region. We hope to help you build a relationship with this forest as a whole being, as a community of beings, and as a land that carries spirit. We'll encounter and learn about our plant and animal neighbors living here, practice attention and embodiment, and talk about the indigenous history, present, and future of this land. We hope you'll leave the forest more animal, more human, and more of the Earth.

Isabel is of Taino ancestry and sprung to life on the island of Bohío (Dominican Rep./Haiti). Like many of her ancestors before her, she migrated to Lenapehoking. She teaches decolonial courses in college bridging the divide between Indigenous and Western perspectives of life. Trained in the Peruvian tradition of plant medicine, she has called Shorakapkok forest her best friend for many years. Sebastian lives near the East River in Queens (Lenape / Matinecock land), and is an environmental educator, land steward, and student of herbal medicine. He is a descendent of settlers with roots along the Sabato river in southern Italy and the Neckar river in southern Germany.

The walk will be pay-what-you-can. Exchange / non-money gifts are also welcome. If you'd like to contribute money, you can Venmo: @sbbouknight or Zelle: sbbouknight@gmail.com

We're going to cap the group at 15 people. Please only register for the walk if you're sure you'll be able to make it! If you register and can no longer make it, please email sbbouknight@gmail.com.

We'll be doing more of these! Keep an eye out for upcoming walks if you can't make this one.
