Focus | AI: Cybersecurity 

The NYU Tandon Future Labs, the first New York City-sponsored incubator, started in 2009, has catalyzed growth for over a hundred startups, and has shaped the tech ecosystem throughout New York. The programs support early-stage ventures that are launching cutting edge technology products, creating jobs, and helping diversify the innovation economy. At any given time we support over 50 companies across four locations across Manhattan and Brooklyn.Since inception, more than100companies have graduated from the program,21through acquisition, for a combined portfolio of graduates valued at over $1B.  Companies include leading startups such as CB Insights, Clarifai, Bounce Exchange, and many others.In the process, the Future Labs companies have generated more than 3,201 jobs and $4 billion in economic impact on the City of New York.

According to CSO Online, “12 percent of enterprise organizations have already deployed AI-based security analytics extensively, and 27 percent have deployed AI-based security analytics on a limited basis.” With new entrants like Google announcing their cybersecurity platform, Chronicle; incumbents such as IBM, Cisco, and McAffee expanding their artificial intelligence security offerings, along with very well funded startups filling the gaps, we'll continue to see exponential interest in the space.
This opportunity also comes with challenges — namely, the talent gap that exists at the intersection of AI and cybersecurity. With tens of thousands of jobs left unfilled, universities are repositioning degree programs and offering executive education in both fields to catch up as quickly as they can with the demand.

Larry Trittschuh is the Managing Director, CSO, Americas for Barclays and the Interim Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Barclays International. Barclays is a British multinational bank and financial services company headquartered in London. It is a universal bank with global reach, offering products and services across personal, corporate and investment banking, credit cards and wealth management. It has operations in more than 40 countries and employs approximately 120,000 people.
Larry is responsible for all aspects of the Chief Security Office (cyber security, physical security, investigations/forensics, and resilience) across the Americas region, including managing the Americas Joint Operations Centre (JOC). As the CISO, he is also responsible for cybersecurity for Barclays International, a diversified transatlantic, wholesale and consumer bank comprised of corporate and Investment banking, Barclaycard, and private banking and wealth management.

Lucas Nelson is a veteran of two startups within an 8-year period — both acquired, one by DoubleClick for $20M and another by Symantec for $40M — and has a deep background in computer security (with a  book on the subject), privacy, SaaS, and cloud computing. He focuses on early-stage companies that can leverage the commodity application stack and cloud services to create significant companies in a highly capital-efficient manner.

As a partner in the deals practice of PwC, Carol Lee recently repatriated to New York City to lead technology-sector initiatives for the deals practice here after having founded and led PwC UK’s Emerging Company Advisory and Technology Media Telecom Valuation practices in London. She previously led the U.S. technology valuation practice in Silicon Valley. Carol excels at valuing innovative companies and their key assets at every stage in their lifecycle. She's passionate about connecting with her clients to share her expertise and insights on how to create value, support it, and project it, having advised a wide range of clients from promising startups to industry-leading companies since 1998. As a member of the AICPA Task Force responsible for drafting one of the latest practice aids addressing equity valuations of privately-held companies, Carol has helped shape valuation practices.

Micahel Landewe cofounded Avanan, a graduate of the Future Labs' Next Round program. The company protects clients' data in the cloud by using the same industry-leading security trusted by clients' data centers. The cloud-based platform is completely out-of-band, requires no proxy, and can be deployed in just 10 minutes. It provides seamless policy governance across users and data in the cloud.

Damon McCoy received his Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Before joining NYU, he was a research scientist at the University of California, Berkeley, and an assistant professor at George Mason University. His research focuses on empirically measuring the security and privacy of technology systems and their intersections with society.

Michelangelo Sidagni serves as CTO for NopSec, where he leads technical development, security research, and operations. Prior to NopSec, Michelangelo was the director of IT security services at Ciphertechs and served as a lead internal security consultant at Blue Cross Blue Shield advising on HIPAA security and privacy initiatives. Michelangelo holds numerous professional certifications in information security including CISSP, CISA, and CIA and is a frequent speaker at information security events around the country. He holds a MBA from the University of Pavia in Italy.

Dr. Dawud Gordon is CEO &amp; Co-Founder at TWOSENSE.AI, an NYC-based cybersecurity startup. TWOSENSE.AI makes multi-factor authentication in the workplace invisible and continuous through AI-based Behavioral Biometrics. This represents the beginning of a paradigm shift, away from making the user prove their identity to technology, and towards enabling technology to learn to recognize us, the same way we learn to recognize each other. Dawud holds a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from KIT in Karlsruhe, Germany for his work on using Machine Learning to recognize social group behaviors from mobile device signals. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers and patents on related topics, and won several awards for his research.
