Fly By Light Summer Showcase

One Common Unity (OCU) breaks cycles of violence and builds compassionate, healthy communities through the transformative power of music, arts, and peace education. Founded in 2000 following a string of school shootings in Washington, DC, OCU is a collaborative effort between educators, artists, and health practitioners dedicated to preventing violence and improving life outcomes for youth and families. Currently based in 23 schools throughout Washington, DC, we train the next generation of youth leaders in social-emotional literacy, arts expression, and conflict transformation; and support them to create positive social change and healing in their communities. Over the past 20 years, we have impacted over 32,500 youth and families, trained over 11,500 teachers, hosted over 81 public concerts and performances, and recently were awarded the Mayor’s Arts Award for Excellence in the Humanities.

Mental Health Matters: Past, Present &amp; Hereafter While the Covid pandemic has had many feeling that it has been the most challenging experience in our lifetime, there aren&#x27;t many things more critical than being in our peaceful, right mind. When our inner or outer worlds are in crisis, art is the place that heals and inspires our heart space. Commune with our youth and special guests in a virtual evening of mental health healing!On June 9th at 7pm EST, Fly By Light youth, Performance Troupe artists, and alumni artists will share original music, poetry, and visual art at our annual Fly By Light Summer Showcase. Special renowned guest artists include: <a href="https://tamikalovejonesdc.com/bio" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Tamika Love Jone</a>, <a href="https://shanellegabriel.com/about" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Shanelle Gabriel</a>, and <a href="https://messiahramkissoon.com/about" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Messiah Ramkissoon</a>.Together we can remain connected, even at a distance. Working virtually in school and after-school during COVID-19 with our seasoned facilitators, these youth have utilized art to find their voices, express themselves, and bring awareness to the issues they face as young people in the world today. This year&#x27;s Summer Showcase will celebrate and recalibrate our light, focusing on optimal mental health through music, poetry, song , visual art &amp; more! With the current global mental health crisis, we are making this year&#x27;s virtual showcase donation-based and open to the entire global community. We want to ensure everyone has access to this healing space that will take place over ZOOM video &amp; Facebook Live. After registration, a ticket with a link will be delivered to your inbox. For anyone who has the means to donate, your support is greatly needed and allows us to shift our social-emotional learning curricula, creative arts programming, and mental health services online to serve our youth and families. Suggested Donation Levels:Youth, student, families, and any individual - FREEHealing Arts for Youth ($5 - $30): sponsors a student to attend a virtual Fly By Light sessionTrauma-focused Therapy ($35 - $75): helps provide critical mental health therapy support for youth suffering from PTSD resulting from abuse, neglect, violence, or griefSupport for Teachers ($100 - $175): helps provide critical trauma-informed care training to teachers as they struggle to support their students during this crisisFamily &amp; Group Therapy ($200 - $350): helps facilitate healing for a family or small group grappling with issues such as grief, trauma, and financial stressCapacity Building Support ($500 and up): helps ensure that OCU can retain every member of our dedicated staff as we work to support communities in crisisAll donations go to One Common Unity, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that for 20 years has been breaking cycles of violence and building compassionate, healthy communities through the transformative power of music, arts, and peace education.
